DEATH'S OWN

Born with an unusual birthmark, the shape of a skeleton’s head with rose patterns round about it on her neck, many believed she would only bring bad luck to those around her. This belief was solidified when two of her suitors died unexpectedly right after a visit to her home. Such a thing should come as a bother to any woman but the same could not be said about Nyx. She didn't care if the beliefs about her were true or false. She never liked any of her suitors. Her heart had always been longing for a certain man whom she was very familiar with in her childhood but ceased to appear before her the moment she entered adolescence. Since she knew him one thing was very certain about him, he was not human since he never aged. Not even once. Believing he would one day come again, Nyx was prepared to wait until the day they would meet again. But not everything goes as planned. Having a sickly mother whose only wish was to see her daughter get married and an influential suitor who didn't mind the deaths around her, Nyx soon found herself married off and her mother passed away leaving a father who dreaded her existence and a husband she never loved. **** From a distance he watched her grow, keeping his distance from her, staying within the shadows. As she aged slowly into adulthood, the mark on her neck became more prominent and so was her scent. He wanted her to grow, but when she finally came of age, he thought she would be better without him. But as time wore on and other men began to show interest in her, he could not hold back nor could he let them have her. He discarded those who had an interest in her but one of them slipped through his fingers while he was away and took her. He waited to see if she was happy with her life, with that man, if she was, then he would let her be. She would be able to live a happy life this time unlike the previous one, but everything changed when the forces from the underworld learned of her existence and her connection with him. Her husband was killed which he permitted and her life was in constant danger. Keeping the distance was no longer an option and he once again appeared before her.

Hurt 2

Hearing her name being called, Nyx stiffened as if being caught cheating on her husband. She didn't know what to say to him and could only hope Reaper would have a way out for her. She raised her gaze to meet Reaper's, silently pleading with him to do something.

Reaper didn't need to hear her speak. Knowing her even before her current life, he already knew what her request was. It hurts that she was asking him to help her out with another man. But then again, he did say he would stay away if she wanted him to, and he wanted her to be happy.

"It's okay," he said with a hand placed affectionately on her head. He kissed her cheek and attempted standing, but she didn't let go of him. Left with no other choice. He picked her up as well. "Those two are your culprits," Reaper said as he turned to look at the police behind Skye. "I will take her to rest. Mr Anders also needs a bed," he said as he walked forward through the police and Skye, who didn't know to say or do in that situation.

Just before Reaper walked past them, Skye caught a glimpse of Nyx's face. Tears stained her face, and a side was stained with dried blood and swollen as well. His heart clenched at the sight of her like that, making him feel even more powerless.

"Take my father-in-law to his room," Skye said to his bodyguards. "Pleaee take them away, Officers." Skye didn't know exactly what happened, but the mam carrying Nyx right now reminded him of the man torturing his life. If not anything else, his eyes and the dark aura that reeked of death around him was enough to leave that impression on him. 'So this is him? The man he is afraid of,' Skye thought to himself.

He wondered how Nyx got acquainted with him, but nothing came into his mind, so he pushed the idea aside the moment a police officer spoke.

"These people need a checkup. They are wounded," the police officer said and spoke into the communication device on his shoulder, calling for an ambulance. They were awake, so there was no need to panic.

"Who did this to you?" The second policeman asked. He came to stand beside them and squatted down since they were still seated on the floor leaning on the wall.

"The two men you that were jus escorted out," the housekeeper replied. She looked at the servant beside her to make sure she was alright. Now that everything was settled and fear was dispelled from them, they could assess what was around them. "Mr Anders need a doctor, not us. They shot him," she said as soon as she remembered.

The policeman's brows pulled together in confusion. The man he saw was not Hury anywhere nit to mention being shot. He was just unconscious, and all his vital signs were normal. There are no signs of an assault or anything like it. "Are you sure about that, Ma'am?"

"I am very certain about what I am saying. One of those men wanted to shoot the Young Miss, but Master took the bullet in her stead. He needs treatment immediately," she held the policeman's hand.

He looked at her for a moment in silence before he spoke, "Come with me," he then helped her up while she looked lost and confused.

Meanwhile, the moment Skye heard that Mr Anders was shot, he walked away from the study to find Nyx. He didn't need anyone to tell that something beyond the natural happened that a man who was shot not so long ago was only sleeping rather than dead. He walked through the rooms until he got Nyx's old room. He knocked once, but there was no reply, and even after the second so he decided to open the door and enter.

On the bed, he found Nyx fast asleep. Her clothes had been changed and the blood stains were also gone. Her hair looked newly washed brushed as well. He frowned, knowing the sue could nitbhave done rhay fir herself in such a such time. It onky meant that the man did it. He clencjed his fists, and jealousy started to creep into his heart until another thoughy surfaced in his mind. There was no way all of that could have been with the hands. Magic must have been used, which meant he never saw her body.

With that thought. His eyes darted to the man seated at the edge of the bed just wat hing as she slept. He reached a hand to her face and tucked a few strands of hair in their rightful place, leaned forward and kissed her forehead, and then stood up.

Skye felt goosebumps rise all over his body when Reaper looked at him. He felt as though his souk would reaped off him if he said or did anything wrong. That man did not send this kind of dread into him. It felt as though he was being stared at by death himself. Without even realizing it, he took some backwards steps.

"Thank you for taking care of her," Skye managed to say. He thought this to be the onky right words to say to Reaper. "I will take over from here," he uttered again but even less confidence in his tone. Compared to him, Reaper looked more like the man on Nyx's life and not him. He felt as if he was intruding.

"Mhm," Reaper hummed. He looked at Nyx once again before walking away from beside the bed. "I leave her to you then," he said as he stopped beisdr Skye and their eyes met. Skye was quick to avert his gaze as the feeling of dread only intensified when he did that.

"I will," he said as if making a promise. He stepped aside, gi ing way for Reaper to walk through. He was surprised that he did not wait until Nyx woke up, but he didn't have the courage to ask him that.

Reaper did not say a word and just proceeded to leave the room. The moment he walked through the door and shut it, he disappeared like he was never there.
