I rolled out of bed and fumbled under the bed for the laptop Allie had bought me last year for my birthday. It was a throw-away gift that meant nothing to me personally. She assumed that because it was expensive, it must me a good gift. She was never any good at gift-giving. It never really came from the heart, to her it was just another chore to maintain the appearance of a happy relationship.
Ash joined me on the couch as I flipped open my laptop. He circled a few times before curling up in my lap, closing his eyes to sleep. The screen flickered to life, and an old picture of Allie and me appeared. I frowned, memories flooding back, but pushed them aside and opened my browser, determined to start my search.
