Chapter 3

[1st POV]

A week has passed since I became a police officer in this interesting city.

Arthur and I patrolled our designated areas every day.

We responded to commotions and robberies several times, but these incidents were minor compared to what's currently happening.

According to conversations, gangs in Gotham have started a new war, and the reason is unclear.

It's certainly not total chaos right now, but the Russian mafia and the Cubans have begun to clash in the slums.

Considering this little war is gaining momentum, Batman will surely show up and get involved.

[+1 Intuition]

[+1 Intelligence.]

I've definitely boosted my intelligence and intuition by a good ten points each over this past week.

I'm just the kind of person who thought a lot.

After coming in one of my favorite stories, I've started monitoring my surroundings and the world around me and putting in various thoughts.

As a result, those two stats have developed the most.

I also gained another twenty points evenly distributed between Strength and Endurance.

I knew those would come in handy.

I realized from my first assignment that I needed new skills and strength here.

So, I started working on myself thoroughly. I began with simple exercises, gym workouts, shooting practice, and learning to handle cold weapons.

While I had just started mastering cold weapons, shooting came easier for me.

We had a special range at the precinct, and the main thing was to hone those skills.

They were essential for every police officer.

I didn't spare myself and took every opportunity to "work out" as much as possible.

However, I was in the back right now, and most of our crew had left the precinct for a call in Arkham.

For some reason, I didn't like that it was going there. I felt calmer knowing that such a crowd could head into the slums for gang wars.

Strange as it may sound, but it was true.

I was left as the duty officer. In other words, I was politely sent to "hang out" far from the grown-ups.

To be honest, I didn't mind.

As I passed by Gordon's office, I heard some noise and swearing.

Naturally, I peeked in.

A pretty girl stood in front of me. She had blue eyes and long, curly red hair that fell to her shoulders.

She looked young, probably around twenty, and given the badge on her bag, she seemed to be a first or second-year law student at our local college.

"Hey! Who are you?! And what are you doing here? This is Commissioner Gordon's office. And you, as I can see, are not him."

"Hehe. Strange, everyone tells me I look like Dad."

"Dad?"

'So, this is what Barbara Gordon is like. Hm. She seemed vaguely familiar from the start. Should I play a little joke on her?'

"As far as I know, the commissioner has no children. Regardless of any family ties or whatever, digging through the documents of a person of his status is a prosecutable offense. How did you even get in here? And step away from his desk!"

 I barked at her.

"Easy there, dude."

She raised her hands in a calming manner.

"I come in peace."

"Uh-huh, and with a peace pipe to boot."

I smirked.

"I'm actually here for business. You're the new guy, right? What's your name? My name is Barbara Gordon."

She extended her hand for a handshake.

I smiled good-naturedly, and she relaxed as I took her hand.

I suddenly pulled her towards me, slipped on one handcuff, grabbed her other arm, and twisted it behind her back.

"Well, you've been caught, thief. Now you're going to tell me everything."

"Hey! I really am your commissioner's daughter. You can check the documents; they're in my bag."

"Alright, Barbara, the thief, I'll check."

Well, this won't interfere with my plans; if anything, I can say they look fake, and I can drag this out a bit for her.

Luckily, those documents weren't there.

"Damn! I forgot."

She now realizes she's in deep trouble.

"Listen, man, I really..."

"Officer Dinklage!"

"Officer Dinklage."

She scowled, then immediately continued in the same tone.

"I really am Jim Gordon's daughter. I'm a student, and I have a presentation coming up at college. I printed it out this morning and put it on the desk next to Dad's documents. He left early and took them with him. I need to find them. Please let me go."

I looked at her suspiciously so she immediately lost faith in her attempts to convince me.

"Aaaah! Look how I got myself into this. Rrrrrr!"

She's quite adorable when she's angry.

After teasing her a bit with the "interrogation," or rather, it was a joke disguised as an attempt to establish her identity and intentions, I decided to take her to a cell.

I understood that they would confirm her information about her family ties. After all, the precinct should know about her.

Of course, I would apologize and head back to my duties.

However, it didn't go that way.

While recognizing her, the police officer smiled like a fox and said they had no idea who she was.

Barbara's face was something else.

The range of emotions she displayed was more than unique and unforgettable.

It was too bad that I didn't have a camera on me at the time, and my phone was dead then.

I couldn't capture that miracle.

In the end, I shoved her into jail before she could regain her composure and start another round of "I'm the commissioner's daughter!" I was quietly laughing.

"Isaac. It seems we've had a rise in cases of important document theft from government agencies lately."

One of my senior colleagues said to me.

"It looks like you caught this thief. We need to process her and interrogate her. I envy you because nothing much is happening on duty, and you've cracked such a case."

They probably think I'll just follow their every word and do what they want.

It looks like they want to pull a prank on me.

"Oh really?"

"It's true, Isaac. Buddy, come on, don't just sit there like a statue, work on the report, and don't forget to come up with a nickname for her. It's a tradition around here. Since you caught her, it's your job to think of a nickname."

"Got it."

After three hours, Commissioner Gordon arrived at the precinct along with Batman.

There had been another escape at Arkham, and about half of the inmates managed to break free.

Batman could only catch half of them with the police. They were discussing something, but I interrupted them.

"Excuse me, Commissioner. Hello!"

I waved at him.

Batman just nodded.

I wonder if he already knows about me.

After all, he knew all the police officers in Gotham and the Arkham staff in the cannon.

He also knew about their personal lives and biographies, as well as their official duties and duty schedules.

A unique person.

I really respect him.

"What is it, Isaac?"

"The thing is, there was an attempted break-in of your documents today. An unknown person infiltrated our premises. I suspect she's the burglar who robbed the City Hall, the Gotham City Archive, and several other major government institutions…"

Afterward, Gordon leaned in and listened intently.

"I managed to detain her in time. She didn't steal anything, just made a mess on your desk. I collected fingerprints and handed them over to the forensic expert for verification against the database. I interrogated her and received confirmation of my theory. She's likely the thief. She has no alibi for the time of the crimes…"

Of course, she doesn't. Most likely, she was present at the crime scenes with Batman and Robin.

"...Additionally, I think she's quite agile. She has an athletic figure and likely practices some martial arts while leading an active lifestyle. She's definitely not an office worker, with her manner of speaking is confident. I almost believed her nonsense when she tried to talk her way out of it. I interrogated her and compiled a report. During the interrogation, she initially denied the accusation but then resorted to threats. Throughout my questioning, she managed to violate 78 state laws, including threatening a police officer, defamation, property rights violations, burglary, attempted seduction, theft, and so on. I made a complete list that could warrant her several life sentences. Right now, she's sitting in a reconstructed solitary confinement cell."

"Well done, Dinklage."

Gordon said in surprise.

"Let's go take a look at this burglar. Have you come up with a nickname yet?"

"Yes. I had a couple of options, Snail and Speedy. However, there was even a third option, Snail-Speedy. The criminal moved quickly and didn't leave any evidence in other reports, but she moved very slowly in this case. And her excuse was rather foolish. That she was your daughter..."

"…But I knew you didn't have any children, so I didn't believe her. I even specifically asked our guys and showed her to them. They confirmed that they didn't know her."

"I see… ahem… ahem."

He barely concealed his laughter behind a cough.

"You know, I think Batman and I will handle her ourselves. You take a break for now. Ahem..."

"Well, good luck to you."

I walked in the opposite direction.

After half an hour, while sitting in the gym at the precinct, I received a message from the system:

"Ding!"
