A hint of light gradually appeared in front of him, slowly expanding into a blurry halo. After several blinks, a familiar face came into Batman's view.
Hearing the familiar sound of equipment working and the intermittent dripping of water, Batman finally came to his senses.
"...Dick?" His voice was incredibly hoarse.
The young man in front of him took off his mask, bent down close to Batman. Batman turned his head away, but Nightwing just shook his head and said, "I'm grateful you still remember my name, Batman. How are you feeling?"
"What happened to me?"
"A massive explosion at a chemical plant." Nightwing said while tidying up the medical supplies on the tray, "It's a miracle you're still alive."
"Why are you here?"
"I don't think you'd want me back to help, but the fact is, if I didn't stop the chaos in Gotham City, Brude Haven wouldn't have many peaceful days left."
"How did you find me?"
"Put your questions aside for now, Mr. Batman. You are not in a state to talk too much now, have some water first."
Nightwing poured some water for Batman and helped him sit up. Looking down at his abdomen, his clothes were soaked in blood as if shards from the exploded building had sliced open his belly.
"There's a strange phenomenon." Nightwing rubbed his lips, "Did you inject yourself with any weird remedies?"
"What happened?"
"Saying it's a miracle isn't an exaggeration. Your injuries should have been much worse. Haven't you noticed? Your wound is healing at a visible speed. I didn't even have time to clean it."
Batman looked down at his wound again and finally realized that it didn't hurt at all.
"Where is... Alfred?"
"He's coming over soon. I was planning to tidy up your wound a bit to avoid scaring him, but it seems that's not necessary now. Come on, put on the monitor, and then I'll get on with my tasks."
"Where are you going?"
"Tim just called me, saying that you and the Prophet disappeared together. When I got the call, I witnessed the explosion. I knew it must have something to do with you two."
"But I only found you at the scene of the explosion, not Barbara. I guess she probably went to find her father."
Batman gently closed his eyes and said, "Find her, protect her. Go."
After losing consciousness for a while, a familiar fragrance woke Batman up. In his dream, he saw a plate of fluffy pancakes, the kind he often ate. When he woke up, he found the source of the fragrance was placed on the bedside table.
"Have some food, sir." Alfred was tidying up something on the side.
Batman looked down again and was surprised to find that his abdominal wound had healed to the point where only a shallow scar remained. After hesitating for a while, he finally spoke,
"I think there might be something wrong with me, Alfred."
"What happened?"
After a pause, Batman said, "I was infected with some kind of virus, and then affected by the gas."
Batman looked down at his wound and said, "The previous host of this virus had an astonishing healing ability. So I think this may be a symptom of deterioration. I don't know how long it will be before the virus takes control of my brain."
"Don't worry too much." Alfred handed the food to Batman and said, "At least we're still here, there must be something we can do, right?"
Batman gulped down his food and downed two cups of hot tea. At this point, he had even managed to sit up from the bed and walk smoothly.
"You're right, Alfred, there is something I have to do, and I have to do it now."
"Stay safe, sir."
When the dark shadow landed back on the rooftop, the rain had lightened up a lot. But without the sound of rain, Gotham City was eerily quiet.
Batman had just checked the people lying on the streets. They were all unconscious due to some unknown toxin. It didn't seem like fear gas, but Scarecrow would definitely know what was happening.
Batman took a deep breath, intending to turn on his location device to see where the radiation peak from the satellite was, but some uneasy emotions arose in his heart, and an indescribable strong desire prompted him to speedily get into the Batmobile and rush off in one direction.
Beep - beep - beep -
When the alarm went off, Scarecrow swiftly turned around and pulled back the curtains; he saw the Batmobile approaching at an astonishing speed.
"What's going on? Didn't the explosion hurt him? How did he come after us so quickly?"
"You and you, stay here and hold him off, everyone else, follow me, quickly! We need to find that idiot Stagg quickly and then restart my cloud burst plan, hurry!"
Arkham Knight, who was leaning against the door with his arms crossed, sneered, "Coward."
Scarecrow shot him a cold look but didn't retort. After all, the original plan was for Scarecrow to distract Batman with a hostage while Arkham Knight was to find Stagg.
But the hostage had escaped from him, and without the hostage, Scarecrow wouldn't dare to confront Batman, who might go crazy, head-on. He could only ask Arkham Knight to stay behind while they went together to find Stagg.
