"No approval." Shiller said without looking up, "You have no letter of recommendation."
With a light "thump," a file was handed to Shiller who dismissed it without a glance, "No way, the recommendation letter will not help. Your grades are too poor, and the fact that your thesis will let you graduate is in itself quite surprising."
Another document was handed over. Shiller gave it a cursory glance and discovered it was a department transfer application from Gotham University that had been through several rounds of approval. Only then did Shiller raise his head, comfortably leaning back in his chair and looking at Bruce, a smirk of satisfaction on his face. He said, "You definitely couldn't have guessed, but I submitted my resignation before you did."
But Bruce was unaffected. He handed another document to Shiller. It was an approval notice for an intern at Arkham Mental Hospital. Shiller snorted, and said, "Nevertheless, I won't approve. I don't accept graduate students. You can't possibly..."
Just as he got to this point, the phone rang again. Shiller stood up from behind his desk and gave Bruce a glance as he walked past him to answer the call. On the other end was Gordon's booming voice:
"Shiller, for goodness' sake! Let Bruce find something better to do. Let him study at your place! If he keeps hanging around Selina every day, we're going to lose an excellent nurse!"
"Can't he study with Victor?" Shiller asked.
"But he is way too happy studying in the physics department! He only needs to spend two hours a day studying, and then he spends 10 hours dating Selina! Come on! Selina has two children, if she also needs to spend time dating, who will do the nursing work?"
Shiller rolled his eyes and said: "So you're suggesting that he comes to the psychology department, and we torment each other so that he can..."
Just as Shiller got to this point, there was a knock at the door. "I'm hanging up," Shiller said into the phone before he went to open the door. Outside stood Mrs. Miller.
After she came in and saw Bruce standing there, she was taken aback. She then smiled and nodded at Bruce, saying, "Look at this kind-hearted billionaire. He just provided our hospital with a new record-keeping insurance information system, saving the nurses from having to write by hand!"
"He is so young, intelligent, and full of energy. Even to the extent that he is willing to intern at an old mental institution. God, it's been so many years since I saw such an eager young man!"
"But he..."
"Oh God, please let go of your old scholarly ideas, Professor Shiller! We're all running out of hands and feet. It's a godsend to have someone help. You wouldn't reject a kind act, right?"
Shiller left his mouth hanging open. He turned to Bruce, sizing him up and down. Bruce returned with a forced smile. After Mrs. Miller had left, Shiller looked at Bruce and asked, "What exactly are you up to?"
Bruce shook his head gently and said, "I'm not joking. Last night, I followed the clues and found that the killer from the hospital cases is hiding in a temporary base near the hospital. It seems he has made you his next target."
"From him, I found out that quite a few serial killers have set their sights on you." Bruce stared into Shiller's face, trying to find a flaw in his expression, but when he saw that Shiller's expression didn't change at all, he had no choice but to ask directly, "What do you think is the reason?"
"Probably because... I'm a psychologist?" Shiller walked back behind his desk, sat down, leaned his head back on the chair, and looked up, saying, "You know? These psychopathic murderers despise being part of ordinary people, but like to hide among them, looking at issues from their perspective."
"They think that ordinary people are stupid and dull, but they are also curious about their inner hearts. They hate mainstream opinions, do not want to fit into society, but still want to know what the public mind and the social direction are."
"In their view, psychology is a fascinating subject. It's a subject that gives them an understanding of people without having to be part of society, and without having to communicate with them. They see it as a shortcut."
Bruce furrowed his brow and asked, "In that case, shouldn't they be studying psychology as students?"
Shiller gently shook his head and said, "Don't use normal people's thinking to speculate on them. When they find out there is such a shortcut in this world, their first reaction is not to take the shortcut themselves but to... kill those who are taking the shortcut."
"As long as they can kill me, they can prove that they are stronger than me." Shiller let his eyelids droop and then turned his gaze to the window.
Bruce shook his head. He felt that this reason was far-fetched and had many potential inconsistencies,
For instance, since Shiller's reputation has been world-renowned for a long time, why are these serial killers only acting now? Moreover, why have they agreed to either not come at all or all come at once?
Considering this, Bruce felt a spark of realization. The group of serial killers... are they too organized?
