CHAPTER FOURTEEN

CASSIE (AVERY)ᥫ᭡

I recollected my thoughts outside the study for a few minutes before going back in, the last thing that I would want to do is to cry in front of him or even cry at all.

When I stepped back inside, he'd already eaten a reasonable portion of food and was gulping down the drugs I had arranged on the table. Maybe I spent a longer time than I intended, who knows? I can't sit next to him again, the atmosphere was way too awkward so I looked around instead.

"Are you a book person,Cassie?" Logan asks, waking me up from my brief staring session at a shelf close by.

"Not exactly," I answered.

"Oh…you were asked to assist me, weren't you?" he asked.

I nodded, "Yeah sure,"

"I need your assistance in fetching a book, please. I'll show it to you," he says as he brings his electric wheelchair close and slided onto it. At least he didn't need my assistance there, the evil in me would urge me to push it backwards while he was trying to sit.

Logan led me to a section of the study and brought out a tag from the drawer which he gave to me.

"Column 12, Greta Van Helsing, " I read aloud.

"Yes, please. It's at the top shelf which I obviously cannot reach,"

"I'll get it then, "

I steadied myself on the ladder and when I went to the column, I ran my fingers through the books there. I can't believe that the books were still fresh and dust free almost like they were cleaned in a 2 minute interval. I found Greta and pulled out the book thereafter before descending the ladder and handing it to him.

"It's a great book, you'll enjoy it, " He said, declining my attempt to give him the book and wheeling away to his desk.

"Seriously? You —"

"Just read it, it's Aunt Heather's novel, "

"Oh," I muttered, looking right back at the front cover. It was a photo of a blonde haired woman in a red bloody background and the title font was very appealing if you ask me.

I took a seat at the couch to start reading and the first chapter was mind-blowing, it's almost like I was a part of the story myself because Gerta is an assassin.

"Isn't Gerta your middle name?" Logan asked from his desk.

Hold up… was this a way to declare that he knows my true intentions? Why would he give me a book about an assassin that had my fake middle name?

"Yeah, it is, " I answered from the couch as he came forward. Should I grab something just in case? My retractable bracelet is still in hand, if he dared to do anything funny, things could get messy.

"What a coincidence? Not a spoiler but I think Greta is really smart, it takes lots of courage to be an assassin. I'd like to consider it an adventure, "

"An adventure? "

If he wanted an adventure, he could go there in a few minutes to wherever he wished, he had the resources after all.

"Yes, aside from murdering people, lying and committing multiple sins. I think it's a great job, "

"A great job? "

"Yeah, assassins get paid. Don't they? "

"Maybe Greta does,"

But I don't. I was supposed to start earning when I became the boss, not a mere assassin. Being an elite in the profession only meant that I could finally be taken care of properly higher than the others, besides, I was never leaving the headquarters without Rodrigo or Eddie, I had no family to spend the money on.

Now that I think of it, it was more like a prison not a 'job' . I traded my freedom for a mere false promise. I took their orders like an obedient slave. And if only this idiot would spill where his damned fortune is then I wouldn't be here trying to be something I'm not. The longer time I spend here, the longer Rodrigo and Eddie enjoy the fruits of my foolishness.

"Ugh!" I hissed and Logan raised his brows. I didn't even notice that he's been speaking all along, my hands were trembling as I grabbed a cushion on the couch to hide them.

"Is everything okay, Cassie? " He asked, his voice low and calm as he approached me.

I didn't say a word. I'm not okay, I've never been and at this point, I never will be.

Each passing day, I am filled with an extra weight in my chest, reminders of why I was indeed 'sent from hell' .

I had no one to talk to or confide it has always been me and it'll forever be. I need a drink urgently, before I lose my mind completely.

I rose from the couch immediately, "I'll be back for your night dosage, "

"Is everything okay? " he asked again looking confused.

I gave him no reply and walked out of the room immediately, with my main focus on getting to my room.

When I got there, I locked the door behind me and pulled out one of the boxes, my meds were still there.

I roughly opened the bag and the drugs scattered on the rug, I swallowed multiple pills and filled up a syringe which I injected into my shoulders. My lips quivered as I fought back my tears, I wouldn't cry, they would, not me.

Momentarily, I fell asleep on the rug to be awakened by a knock on the door. F*ck. My eyes searched and landed on the neon clock on my desk. It was already 6pm.

"I'm coming," I yelled.

I brushed the strands of hair stuck to my face away and cleaned up the drool on my cheek before stuffing up the drugs into a bag and placing it in my closet far from human sight.

"Come in," I said, using my hands to arrange my white long skirt and dust off a few remnants of the capsules on my blue shirt.

The door swung ajar and Rosita's head popped in, "Master Logan wants to see you,"

I guess it's time for my evening shift.

"Oh, where is he?" I questioned.

"The garden, I'll take you there," She offered.

I only nodded and wore my slides before following her behind as she led me to the so-called garden.

"Why does he want to see me?"

"I guess you just have to find out for yourself," She smiled, leading me to the back of the house that brought us to a fine exquisite flower garden with varieties of flowers ranging from tulips to chrysanthemums and even roses. There's a water fountain of a small cherub sculpture in the middle and a few steps from the garden was a green house. Not to mention butterflies, I found Logan under a mini bamboo shade, staring at the orange sunset.

"I'll leave you then," Rosita's voice awoke me from my moment of admiration. I've never seen anything this beautiful.

She took her leave and I approached him, "You wanted to see me," I stated.

Logan turned his head to look at me "Sssh," he whispered.

"Are you literally shushing me right now?" I fired.

"It's prettier in silence, Cassie," He smiled, leaning towards a bunch of daffodils.

I came closer and slowly, my head paid no more attention to the chirps of the birds and the chills of the soft evening breeze but to the caterpillar exiting its cocoon as a butterfly.

My jaw partly dropped, this was glorious to watch and I got to witness it first-hand for the very first time. Something getting reborn with a new identity and personality.

"Wow," I whispered as it took its first flight away from us.

"So, you see—"Logan started but I placed my index finger on his lips.

"It's prettier in silence, Logan,"

I could feel his lips curl into a smirk on my finger and I took it away.

"It's really intriguing," I commented as the butterfly was out of sight.

"Indeed. Miss Hugh, "

"Why did you call me here? "

"You were in a bad mood, I thought that this could cheer you up plus it'll be selfish of me to watch this on my own, "
