Crimson Advent

Alexia Rose is a girl born into misfortune. She was born with a weak constitution as well as an illness that landed her in the hospital for the rest of her short life. Her only comfort was inside of a VRMMO called Legend Conquerors Online. However, when she dies a while after her 18th birthday, Alexia doesn't expect to wake up in the body of her avatar in the game, Eris Vermilion. What will she do now? What secrets will she uncover about her origins? Will she wade through rivers of blood to conquer the realms like she did in the game? Or will Eris and her allies be overwhelmed by the dark threats that loom over the horizon?

Chapter Twenty: Death

For the rest of the day, Alexia thinks. She knows that she wants another chance at life. She doesn't want to die without doing something that she's proud of. The question is, does she want to keep her memories of this life? Does she want to remember all the sorrow and pain that she's experienced in this world? Does she want to remember not moving her real legs at all, her parents throwing her aside like a piece of trash, or the utter despair that she has lingering in her heart as a result of her brother's death.

But then there are also some good memories that she does not want to lose. Spending time with Arthur and her nurse, who's like a second mother to both of them. Then there are her memories within the game world. All the battles she's fought, the enemies and monsters she's defeated, and the world that she built. It may have all been fake, but the world of Legend Conquerors Online was a second home to Alexia because it was the only place where she could experience true freedom. She hates the idea of losing all of these memories, and at the same time, there are many that she wants to forget. Finally she comes to a decision, and right about at that time, she hears a knock on the door.

"Alexia… it's me. Can I come in?"

"Yes," the girl answers.

Erica opens the door and goes to the side of Alexia's bed where she's suddenly seized by the little girl's embrace, "Whoa… hey what's…"

"I'm so sorry," Alexia says, cutting off her nurse's words, "I never should've said those things."

Erica can hear Alexia's hics and sobs as she begins to feel her warm tears on her shoulder, and she returns the girl's embrace, "It's alright. You were hurt. Trust me, I know what you're feeling right now."

"I'm sorry… I'm so sorry." Erica gently strokes Alexia's head as she continues to cry into her shoulder, "Please stay. I… don't want to be alone anymore."

Erica smiles warmly, "I'm not going anywhere."

Alexia continues to spend the rest of the day with Erica, talking, reading, and watching television. Soon, the dark of night envelops the light of day, and the moon becomes high in the sky above the hospital. But, this moon is much different than what Alexia had seen. The young girl looks through the shades of her window to find that the moon is almost blood red in color.

"A lunar eclipse," says Erica as she looks out the window too.

"This is the first time I've seen a real one." she then mutters to herself, "Is this some sort of sign?"

"Did you say something?"

"No. Don't worry about it. I think that I'd like to turn in for the night."

"Alright. I'll see you in the morning."

Erica is about to walk out the door when Alexia says, "I love you… mom."

The nurse turns around in surprise to see the young girl with a sweet smile on her face, "I love you too."

Erica turns out the light and closes the door. However, the young nurse doesn't realize that this will be the last time she'll see Alexia alive. The young girl chooses not to mention the foreboding message or the large bursts of pain that she's now been experiencing throughout the day. That night, Alexia thinks over everything that happened in her almost 19 years of her life, both good and bad, while being kept awake by the pains spreading through her body. She wonders what awaits her after death. Was that message just some hacker playing a prank, or was she really getting a second chance?

The sun rises on a new day, and Lauren, who's the nurse in charge of taking care of Alexia that morning, gives her report in a solemn tone, and tears running down her face. Alexia passed away as soon as the sun rose. Erica quickly makes her way to the young girl's room to find the young girl with her eyes closed, and a genuine smile on her face. Her heart monitor no longer lets out synchronized beeping sounds, but instead is a long, drawn out noise. Erica drops to her knees beside Alexia's deathbed. She understood why Alexia called her mother and said that she had loved her. And that was because that was her last chance of ever doing that. The nurse began to cry just like a mother who had lost their last child. Erica then looks up at the warm smile on the young girl's face.

Through her rivers of tears, the nurse also smiles, "You weren't afraid. You knew that this was probably going to happen. And instead of telling me, you spared me from a painful truth. You were truly one extraordinary girl, Alexia."

One story ends, another begins. Alexia doesn't know where she is right now. All she can see is darkness and emptiness. She can't feel, hear, taste, anything at all. There's total silence, but at the same time, there's quiet and peace. She doesn't feel the pain or the hard breathing that she did before she died. Then suddenly, from out of the void, a blue panel appears that reads, "Do you want your second chance?" There are no yes or no buttons and she can't feel her arms or legs, so she consciously chooses yes. The blue panel disappears and another one takes its place that asks, "Would you like to retain all memories of your previous life?"

Alexia thinks to herself, "Memories are important. They serve as an individual's guide for the future. I want to remember everything so that I know what not to do in whatever this new life holds for me. I want to keep my memories."

The panel disappears, and Alexia is left alone once more in the void, without any light or feeling. It's then that she can feel something more, like her consciousness itself is beginning to move across time itself.
