I pulled away from Chloe, and we both shared a look of mutual frustration.
“She probably shouldn’t know what, um…” Chloe didn’t have to finish her sentence. I knew what she meant.
“You go downstairs first, and I’ll pretend I was up here using the bathroom.”
“What are you going to tell Sylvia, about why you’re here in the middle of the night…when she’s not home?” Chloe’s eyes were filled with worry.
“I’ll think of something,” I offered.
Chloe nodded and turned to leave. She stopped in the doorway to her room, one hand on the frame. She looked over her shoulder, turning her body at an enticing angle. “I really wish they hadn’t come home for at least another hour.”
“Or three,” I said with a smile.
She smiled, almost shyly, her face turning red. Then Chloe disappeared out the door, and I headed for the bathroom down the hall.
