Chapter 14

Josh ran after her.

"Whoa, ma'am back, said the Sheriff.

"She is his cousin," said Henry.

The Sheriff walked them over to the gallows.

"Lone Wolf," said Little Woman.

"Don't' cry cousin, we'll meet again real soon," said Lone Wolf.

"Come on," said Josh pulling her away from Lone Wolf she got blood on her dress from hugging him.

Natives were gathering all around Lone Wolf watching. Josh kissed Little Woman ad hugged her as she cried. The deputies walked them up to be hanged. They made each of them stand in front of the rope. They tied there hands in front of them. One older Native said in English. "Do not fear the white man's fire if you die, you die bravely."

"My son, safe journeys," said Henry.

"You as well father," said Lone Wolf.

All the native women started to cry, and the native men stood there.

"Any last words, are any of you Christians?" asked the reverend.

Lone Wolf looked out towards Red Bear and Bob who were covered up in white sheets, then he looked out towards the crowd and spoke to the natives that were all standing by.

"There are so few of us left now. We should not hate the ones that have betrayed their people by the white men. No one knows why the one God let the white eyes take our land. Why did there have to be so many of them? Why did they have so many guns, so many horses, for many years the One God made me a warrior. That was my power. Now my time is over, now may be the time of our people is over."

Then the deputy's grabbed a black cloth and put them over their heads and pulled the lever. Once they were dead, they cut them loose and let them fall to the ground. Little Woman walked towards Lone Wolf's body she bent down and untied his hands, and took the black cloth off his head.

She started to cry as she stroked his face and hair. Josh got into Frankie's wagon and rode up to the gallows. The Native people gather around Little Woman and helped her load him in the back of the wagon, then they gather around Red Bear and picked him up and put him in the wagon as well. The townsfolk helped Josh pick up Henry and the rest of the boys and loaded them up in the wagon as well. They took them out of town. The Native people followed them.

They went to Frankie's house. Frankie was already digging in the ground under the willow tree. They arrived at Frankie's house and paused the horses, they looked towards Frankie and saw that he was digging ditches already. So they went up with the wagon and the native people followed behind. So they arrived at the gravesite, and Frankie helped Josh put them in the ground and they buried them. They stood back and stood there for a while and watched the sun go down.

The sky was orange. Josh stood behind Little Woman holding her and looking at the sky. The native said there respects and left. Frankie, Josh, and Little Woman stayed there to watch the sky change. Frankie patted Josh on the back and walked back up to the house.

"I better take you back to the hotel," said Josh.

"Okay," said Little Woman turning around to walk to the wagon.

So they got into the wagon and Josh drove her back to the hotel and walked her up to her room. They walked in and her friend gave the baby back to Little Woman.

"He slept the most of the day," said Sarah.

"Thank you, friend," said Little Woman.

"Let's go back to Frankies and leave this hotel, we can live there with him, and we'll have an actual house," said Josh.

"I know," said Little Woman looking down at the baby.

So Josh packed her stuff and they rode in the night back to Frankie's house, the house was lit up, the lamps were on in the house the door opens and Frankie was standing in the doorway. He smiled. They got off the wagon and walked inside. Frankie shuts the door behind him and turned the lights off.
