Chapter 3

Olivia's pov

The evening moves faster than it normally does when I am still in Texas, maybe it is because of the house surveying that I used all the rest of my day to focus on swallowed much of my time.

Initially, my Mom planned to return to Texas the same day without minding the stress she will put herself in, including our little Mia. But since Mia's school is on holiday, it was easy to persuade her to spend the night in my place and continue their journey back to their destination the second day.

“Olivia, please be fast, I am feeling sleepy already” Mia complained again, she yawned for the sixth time but more loudly this time. She was sitting on the kitchen cabinet that was opposite the dishwasher.

“As you can see, I am also trying my best, not like I am at fault. You are the one that devoured all the junk food you bought in the mall” I rolled my eyes, I knew I was backing her and she won't be able to see my expression, but I still do it anyway.

I pour the grilled chicken into the sauce that's on the electric cooker, use the spoon to mix it before using the lid cover to enclose it.

“ Mia, quickly go and check if my mom is awake, it's late already,” I muttered, while I continue to rinse my hand in the sink.

“ You are sending me on an errand again, Olivia”

I face her. Her face has frowned in protest, I don't know whether it was because I am yet to get the food done or this is another thing entirely. She is too stubborn.

“Don't start again, or else I won't allow you to follow mom whenever she is coming to visit me,” I tried to sound serious, but my voice was distorted. I end up laughing in the end.

“ Olivia, do you think I will ever visit someone that always starves me, “ she replied sharply, and immediately looked away; that's one of the habits she usually puts up to show that she is very angry.

See this, I didn't hesitate to walk toward her, dragged her closer, and start to massage her hair gently.

“ Hope you know you can't keep getting angry like this, you always look ugly and I don't like seeing you that way,” I bit my lower lips. I have a lot of things to do other than petting a seven years old girl like this, but I dare not ignore her. Moreover, it's not like I have found someone to replace my second Mom.

After some minutes, she eventually looked at my side, maintaining her straight face. I smiled at her, just that her expression doesn't seem like he is going to return the favour.

“ You are something else, Olivia, “ she muttered out of nowhere and then hissed.

I use the tip of my fingers to give her a slight push on her forehead, “ You're too stubborn, don't think I will beg you again,” I stopped messaging her hair and turned back to the sauce that was on fire.

The aroma has already taken over the entire kitchen, as big as it is.

I turned the gas off before walking to the shelf to pick some plates to put the food in.

I started to dish out the food. When I was done with the food. I tilted to look if Mia was still sitting on the cabinet. But to my surprise she was no longer there, maybe she was really angry that she went back to the sitting room, I thought to myself. Or maybe she went to wake up my mom as I commanded......

“ Are you looking for me?” A tiny voice that's merely above whisper stopped my train of thought. I instantly darted my head to the side to confirm if I just heard Mia's voice. Disappointed and strangely, she was standing side by side with me, scratching her forehead with her eyes poking on the white tile, moving frantically like they were in search of something.

I grinned, “ How may I help you, madam?” I wanted to laugh at her, but I tried to restrain myself from doing so. Instead of giving me an answer, she stopped scratching her forehead, move her fingers to meet the other hand and started to twirl them together.

“ Just give me my food, I'm hungry,” she said slowly without looking up.

“You don't have to ask, I will go and set the dining table immediately, “ I paused, my eyes scrutinizing her face, “ Hope you can now go and wake your mom up while I'm on this?”

I waited for her answer, but she refused to give me one. Without saying a word, she turned and strode to the kitchen entrance and disappeared.

I sighed.

What a strange girl she is.....

**************

After dinner, it's already too late to be involved in any conversation with my mom. Mia on the other side only managed to finish her food after reluctantly rejecting it at first. The next place she ended up after leaving the dining room was the bedroom. She went to sleep immediately.

“ Ohh! I forgot to ask. Hope you thank the driver before he leaves?” my mom whose eyes were fully engrossed on his phone screen, busy replying to her WhatsApp messages ask all of a sudden.

She dropped her iPad on the glass table and faced me.

“ Yes, he was a very nice guy,” I muttered as I dragged the dining chair back a little to create space for my body.

 I took my seat.

She didn't say anything after that, just picked up her phone again and continued with whatever she was doing. I also shoved my phone out of my pocket.

Since I don't have much to attend to, I decided to play a game before I go to bed.

I nearly screamed when I saw twenty-five missed call notifications on my phone. I instantly unlocked it and went to check my call logs directly.

10 missed calls from Edward, and 15 missed from Victoria, my best friend.

I don't know why Edward is calling me all of a sudden. Yes, he was once my boyfriend and we already ended things for good, I recently unblocked him when Victoria kept saying what I am doing to him is not too good. Since I unblocked him, he has kept disturbing me with calls every single day.

I already told him not to ever call me again, but he was so stubborn that he still kept on calling.

I hissed, Why is he calling me again? I grumbled silently.

“ And who is that?”

“Edward,” I blabbered his name out before I could even stop. I looked up to see my mom staring at me, her phone was back on the table. And with her expression, I know what she is trying to say again.

“ Don't even start now, Mom” I mouthed, frowning my face a little.

“ Olivia, I think we need to talk.”

I dropped my phone and yawned, “ Can we do this tomorrow please, I need to take a nap”

“ Too late, here me out first before anything else,” her tone was serious again. I know more than anyone not to come up with an excuse when she is like this.

“ Okay, I'm listening,”

“ You can't push him away forever, and I am sure you know that. And I know it is because you know he loves you that's why you are being dramatic like this....“

“ That's not it,” I cut her off.

“ Don't interrupt me,” She cautioned, then continue.

“ Why don't you give him a second chance, nobody is above mistake. Moreover, we both know this is partially your fault....”

“ And why is that?”  I bit my lower lip as the words moved out of my mouth. She threw me a warning glare.

“ Because you crave too much attention, I'm your mother, and I don't think I will ever lie to you, especially in choosing your partner,” she paused for a few seconds.

“ You know the nature of his job, Police don't have that much time.”

“Can I talk now?” I managed to ask and she nodded.

“ That's not the only reason. I just don't want to be in any relationship for now,” I tilted my head to a side to avoid her eyes.

“ Can you just please stop siding with him because he is your best friend’s son. I'm also your daughter,” I said tonelessly.

“ Have told you not to ever bring my friend into this, this has nothing to do with her. Edward is the one I want for you. If you need time, he is ready to give you, and it will be easier to sort this out since both of you are now living in Alaska “

My eyes widened at her last words.

“ Edward is here in Alaska?”

“ Yes, he was posted to the city a month ago, any problem?”

“Now I can see the reason you insisted on me coming to this place” I mumbled bitterly. I can't just believe this is the reason she wants me to come down here after opposing the motion at first. Is it a must to love someone again? I'm trying hard to get over him but my mom is the one making it worse for me.

“ I need to go to bed, let's continue this tomorrow morning please, “ I stood up from the chair without waiting for her reply

“ Olivia!”

“ Not again mom, I need to go out to see if the compound lights are on,” I gave her an excuse.

I walked to the door instantly, I'm about to push it open when I remembered I have no idea of the door password.

“ Password?” I called.

“ 8902” she answered flatly. I can sense a hint of anger in her voice,  but that is the least I care about right now.

I pushed the door open and walked through the hallway, completely lost in my reverie. Suddenly, the memory of what happened in the afternoon started to pop up in my head. Especially Michael's words about me changing the door password.

My lips trembled as I remembered his last words about the prisoner breaking into my home if I don't change it.

What am I even thinking about, I shook my head to dislodge the thought.

Not like the person I saw on the TV was that scary, he was even my type of man. Gosh! Why am I even thinking about him when I am supposed to go do something to protect myself from him.

Even if he planned on breaking into a home, it can never be mine of all people.
