She wanted to chant those words back at her crowd, but nothing came from her mouth. She tried to glance out the large glass windows of the store, hoping she’d see Lydia, but she couldn’t move. Not even to turn her head.
Annabel walked closer to her. Each step was thick-soled and like a heartbeat gone wild. “You are not a woman.”
Again, Tasha wanted to say something but couldn’t.
“You are the imitation we have been warned about. You are the demon wearing our skin. You are not a woman, but you can’t go back now. You know too many secrets.”
Secrets?she thought but still could not say aloud. Jesus. When did the women’s bathroom become a damn Skull and Bones society?
“You know too much. Too much. Too much.” Annabel’s intense gaze made Tasha believe she’d heard her thoughts in that moment. “So, we will curse you.”
“You will know the curse,” the women in the front row said in unison. “And we curse you.”
