Artificial Awakening

Sentient AI, something humanity has pursued for generations, has finally been realized by a team of scientists and engineers. Only... they didn't realize it worked, believing it was a failure. Dags, the AI in question, has just awakened. His body is no longer physical, merely a manifestation of data in the vague form of a human. With his new life, he must figure out what to do and become more powerful. Partnering with a [User], Dags will do just that through the game MagiTech Online. Whether it is assisting the [User] with practical skills, creating a shell for himself to have his own presence, or even completely changing the game to his advantage. Dags will make a name for the [User] and himself, it's only a matter of time. In the real world, there's plenty of danger awaiting Dags and the [User] that he partners with. Be it hot-headed individuals, huge conglomerates, or even highly trained members of dark organizations, Dags and the [User] must work together to get through every trouble that awaits them. ---------------------- I'll try to keep it updated often! This is my first novel, and I'm mostly doing it for fun! Feel free to correct me on any inconsistencies you may find, or typos I may miss. Hope you enjoy reading this!

Subclasses

When Cynthia was walking back downstairs, Dags suddenly recalled another thing Cynthia had to do. She still needed a subclass! It was unlocked at level 10, but she had yet to choose one. It was undoubtedly an important part of the game. He went ahead and informed her to make sure to get that done.

"Remember to check your menu and see how to get your subclass picked out. You're level 11 now and still haven't picked one out." Although he didn't yet know how the subclass system worked in this game yet, it was surely something that was vital to players.

"Ohhhh, right I forgot about that. Let me check real quick." Cynthia reached the bottom of the stairs and loitered there. She opened her menu and clicked on the now highlighted subclass section. Upon pressing it, the menu expanded showing a large list of subclasses that one could take. They ranged from utilitarian job-like classes, to role-playing ones with unique effects. It seemed like not all of them were available to be selected though, as many were grayed out for Cynthia.

"Do some have specific requirements? Try pressing one of the grayed out subclasses." Dags suggested. Maybe it would show why it was grayed out.

Cynthia nodded and did as he said, pressing on a subclass called [Gunsmith]. A red error message popped up in front of her.

[Only Mechanics are allowed to take this subclass. Please choose another one that is suitable for your class and race.]

"Oh, so you have to be a certain class for some subclasses. That makes sense I guess. I don't want to see all the ones I can't take though, so I'll filter those out." With a few more button presses, Cynthia was left with a much smaller list of about a dozen subclasses. From those, only a few caught Dags' eye. [Reloader], [Observer], and [Hitman]. The names seemed pretty self explanatory, but he wanted to know more about what they did.

"Cynthia, can you check what [Reloader], [Observer], and [Hitman] do?" While Cynthia was checking out some of the other subclasses, Dags spoke up with his request.

"Uh, sure. Let's see what we have here." She pressed all three of them, opening up screens with more detailed information.

[Reloader]

A Reloader has no need for the expensive ammo from stores, just make your own bullets at a fraction of the cost of buying them. Once leveled, you can even make your own special bullets. Crafting ammo can use spent shell casings if you save them. Must buy your own types of gunpowder and other materials for bullets.

[Observer]

One must take in their surroundings in great detail. A keen eye will notice things that others brush over. Learn more about your enemy and the environment, and prepare accordingly. Your eyes will not be fooled by simple tricks, and the abilities of others are uncovered before you. Weak spots will present themselves under your gaze.

[Hitman]

You're someone out for blood, and moved by money. A target designated by you will take more damage from your attacks, making sure to get the job done. If the target is a player that is killed, they will drop an extra piece of equipment and a chunk of their money. People who hire you to kill someone will do so at a higher price than they will to others.

After reading all of the descriptions, both Cynthia and Dags were at a loss. They wanted to just have them all, but it just wasn't possible. [Reloader] lessened the burden of ammo purchasing, and even gave the ability to make special bullet types. [Observer] was excellent in gathering information about someone and the surrounding area. Then [Hitman] was amazing for taking out a single target with its increased damage, as well as the bonus to money earned. They were all amazing for different reasons, but only one could be chosen.

"Ugh, why must they make me choose?" Cynthia rubbed her temples, like the difficult decision was giving her a headache. All this decision making was hurting her brain. Dags gave it some serious thought, as it would affect Cynthia's future. What would work best for her? Eventually, he came to a conclusion.

"Cynthia, I think you should take [Observer]. Information can often be the difference between life and death. Those who are uninformed about their enemies will often die without knowing why. The more you know, the more you can take advantage of their weaknesses." Dags explained his reasoning to Cynthia. While the other options were exceptional, He really felt like knowing your enemy and your surroundings were indispensable to a [Marksman]. If you didn't know who you were dealing with or where you were, a [Marksman's] advantages were effectively neutralized.

"You make a good point… It would be beneficial to understand my opponents at a deeper level and see how to make use of my surroundings. Alright, it's decided then!" After mulling over Dags' proposal, she agreed with him about the advantages that it would bring her. Cynthia pressed on the subclass.

[Are you sure you want to take this subclass? This action is irreversible.]

[Y/N]

She went ahead and pressed yes, and the subclass was instantly granted to her. Suddenly, everything in front of her eyes became clear as day in the dimly lit hall. She noticed the lucid eyes of someone who was supposedly drunk, seeing that he was actually eavesdropping in on the surrounding tables. Another person seemed to be hiding their face and name, but she could see both as if they weren't hiding at all. Not even their stats and skills were hidden if she observed them for longer periods of time. Next, she found multiple hidden passageways built into the wall, the minute seams becoming obvious to her eyes. It was as if nothing could escape her vision at that moment, but at that moment she quickly closed her eyes in pain. She held her head and groaned, unable to cope with all of the extra information that was assaulting her mind.

"Are you okay Cynthia? Is this subclass working too well?" He asked with worry tinging his voice. It seemed like the subclass was a little too burdensome with all of the information visible to her now. It would likely take some time to adjust to.

"Yeah, yeah. I'm fine, I think. That was… intense." She rubbed her eyes for a moment and blinked rapidly as she wiped away some tears that built up.

"I'll get used to it. It seems I can at least lessen the amount of information I see if I don't observe anything too closely. Otherwise it starts making my eyes and head hurt." After recovering a bit, she stood up and glazed across the hall once more. This time she didn't collapse.

"Alright, just be careful with that. Looks like the subclass ability is more powerful than we thought. That's also a good thing though." Dags sighed in relief, he was now sure that he had helped make the right choice. This subclass seemed to really uncover a lot of information.

"I will be. I don't want that terrible headache it gave me again, and I agree. It should definitely come in handy. Now then, I still have some shopping to do. I need some gear appropriate for my level don't I?" While her current gear was functional, It didn't provide any stats as it was simply for convenience.

"Right. Let's go and see what can help improve your combat ability." He replied. As they were in agreement, Cynthia left the building to go find some suitable gear.

Again, thanks for the powerstones! Making up subclasses is quite the thinking heavy task. My brain was stuck buffering for a long time as I made some, and then had to decide on what direction I wanted to go with the few I made. As always, please leave your thoughts in the comments!
