ALONE: Retold

"Kelvin... If I leave, Zula will kill everyone," I said in a shaky voice, before breaking down into sobs. I closed my eyes and allowed the tears to flow freely. If I were to leave, then my previous experiences would come to pass. "What are you saying? You don't have to be a hero! Someone else can do that!" His voice was already rising. "I don't need a hero... I-I need my sister," he pleaded in a small broken voice. Hearing his pained voice shattered my bruising heart into a thousand pieces. "I love you all," I managed to say. "What? NO!" he screamed but I cut the connection. *** A ritual has governed Aromes since its existence. Every fifty years, the first born child of a family has to face Zula and die. Five Days Ago (1)

(Five Days Ago)...

"The breakfast isn't going to wait for your ugly mouth!" Kelvin shouted while pounding on my bathroom door.

Someone had to teach this boy manners, and I was not that person. At least not today.

"First, you do not have the right to barge into my room. Second, I can't come out if you refuse to leave MY ROOM!" I screamed from the bathroom.

I couldn't sleep well last night because of his incessant noise. He had been repairing one of his many failed inventions in the middle of the night. That explained why I woke up late and was currently having a bath when I should have been downstairs having breakfast with my family.

All thanks to him!

"Do you think my eyes would even register what you look like without your girly clothes?" He asked and I could have sworn I heard him smirk.

He ruined my sleep and to top it up, he barged into my room. He was being a jerk and was banging on my bathroom door, threatening to break it with his constant pounding rather than apologize for ruining my beauty sleep routine.

What sort of brother did I get?

"Get out of my room!" I screamed, unable to bear listening to him anymore.

I got the worst kind of brother!

"Or what? You'll call your parents?" He snickered. That annoying sound of his. "Come on, call daddy?" He said in a singsong manner, trying and failing to mimic me.

I was so not doing this with him!

Turning the showerhead to the highest water volume so I could tune him out, I continued my bath. I took my time, scrubbing my skin with extra care to make Kelvin wait even longer. I could still hear the faint sound of his fist connecting with my bathroom door, but I ignored him.

Sore your fist up, jerk!

I finished rinsing my body after a huge amount of time but kept the shower running, just to fool Kelvin even further. Fixing my massive wet curls into a low bun, I decided to turn off the shower. I focused my attention on the door and realized it was silent outside.

The loser gave up!

Perfect timing!

Smiling at my victory, I wrapped my fluffy purple towel around my body and proceeded out of the bathroom. As I turned to my dressing table, I almost jumped out of my skin.

There was a figure standing in the middle of my room.

Sudden fear enveloped me and my fingers started to tremble.

Inhale and exhale Xena. I willed myself to get my glasses before panicking.

With shaky legs, I moved to the dressing table and picked up my glasses. My hands still trembled as I put them on while begging my heart to remain calm and focus on the intruder. The blurry figure cleared before my eyes and I was both relieved and angry at the same time.

"Kelvin!" I screamed, holding both of my hands to the towel as if my life depended on it.

Kelvin!

"Hey, dingbat," he whispered.

He stood there in the middle of my properly arranged room, smirking at my appearance. He placed his hands in his jeans pocket and roamed his light brown eyes around my room, before bringing it back to me.

"See? No reactions from me. You look as weird as ever." He snickered again, flashing me his single dimpled cheek.

Annoying little creep!

"Get out!" I screamed, my hands turning white in anger. His smile only grew bigger as I snapped. It made him look even cuter.

Focus, Xena.

Kelvin wasn't cute, he was annoying!

"My vision grows weaker the longer I stay in here," he said continuously batting his brown eyes to pass the message.

"Get out!" I repeated, stomping my left foot on the ground.

I have had enough!

"You have five minutes unless you want to eat my leftovers. Bye Dingbat!" He chirped, marching his body out of my room.

For a fifteen-year-old, Kelvin was tall. He could almost reach the top of my room's door if he wanted. He had a thin frame though, my mum said the food he consumed on a regular went to his brains. I am sure they went to the most annoying, super absurd part of his brain that's why he had so many failed inventions.

Such a waste!

I locked my door after him and returned to my dressing table. I picked up a yellow dress from my cloth drawers and put it on. Studying my reflection in the mirror, I applied a little gloss over my lips, put on my black flats, and moved to unlock my door again.

As I stepped out of my room, the smell of breakfast filled my nostrils, bringing a huge smile to my face. Taking the stairs one at a time, I began hearing the clatter of plates.

"Oh no! They've had breakfast without me!" I exclaimed out loud.

I rushed to descend the stairs, taking them two at a time, hoping to reach faster. As I neared the landing, my leg twisted and the distance between the floor and my face didn't seem far anymore. My heart skipped as I braced myself for impact. I squeezed my eyes shut as I waited for my death.

People die falling off of staircases!

I waited for death to come with my eyes still closed. I feared that if I opened them, I would see my soul floating away from my family. So, I waited.

"Honey, I am very hungry and your mom would be mad at me for making you kids wait." I heard my Dad's voice very close to –my soul– talking to someone.

"Xena, open your eyes," he whispered softly.

Was he talking to me?

"I am alive?" I asked out loud, finally acknowledging the strong warm hands holding me.

Was Rema here?

I slowly opened my eyes, expecting to find my prince in shining armor. But, I was disappointed.

I was in my Dad's arms.
