Competition

Alex was done changing into his P.E. uniform, so he and Oliver headed to the designated area where their P.E. class would be held.

When the two reached the school field together, a bunch of students looked at them cautiously. The bodies underneath those shirts that they were wearing were incredible which made them wonder if these two were truly students like them.

Rachel who arrived at the school field alongside the other girls noticed the stares of the boys while looking at Alex and Oliver had changed. She wasn't sure what specific changes happened in that short time, but she felt like they were looking at the two with some form of respect.

The P.E teacher who saw everyone was already gathered decided to make the class run five laps under the scorching heat.

"Alex come, my comrade, this too is a battlefield that must be conquered. Let us show the others how we run through the battlefield."

Alex was a little surprised by Oliver's sudden declaration but he was not that shocked since his companions before were also an equally eccentric bunch.

"Very well, let's us do this."

"Hahaha, now that's what I'm talking about."

The two got into the starting position and so did the other students the very second the teacher signaled the start the two burst and started running leaving behind the other students in their dust.

A full lap in the school's track was four hundred meters meaning five laps was two kilometers. Both Oliver and Alex were neck and neck and it didn't even take them forty seconds before they were able to finish one lap.

On the second lap, the two seemed to be speeding up even more, and they were able to pass the students who hadn't even finished one lap. Not only were the students bewildered, but even the teacher couldn't believe his eyes as he looked at his stopwatch. These two were not at the same level as any student of their age.

In this world were mercenaries and soldiers were practically superhuman the top athletes were not at the same level, the speed at which Alex and Oliver were running wasn't impossible but still, it was an amazing sight to behold for someone their age to be able to do such a thing.

The teacher wanted to recruit them to join the track and field club, but then he remembered the rumors about these two students.

'Even so, no matter what their personalities are, these two are worth it.' The P.E. teacher became even more determined when he looked at the two running on their third lap already.

Alex and Oliver finished the five laps quite easily, but they were unable to determine who was faster since they reached the finish line almost at the exact same time. Alex was once again surprised by Oliver's physical prowess, and Oliver was feeling good to be able to move around like that with someone his age able to keep up with him.

"You truly are a worthy comrade." Oliver happily smiled as he slapped Alex's shoulder. While the two were talking the P.E. teacher approached them.

"Are you two interested in joining the Track and Field Club?"

"I apologize instructor, but I have other duties than I need to attend to," Oliver answered quickly as if he was already used to such questions. The P.E. teacher was disappointed as he changed his focus to Alex.

"Then how about you?"

"I too have some obligations after school, so I can't join."

"I see..."

The P.E. teacher left feeling dejected normally he would be more pushy but knowing the rumors about these two doing that might backfire on him.

Rachel who had just finished running the five laps looked at Alex feeling a little confused. Unlike, yesterday it seems that Alex's attention wasn't fully on her, in fact, it was barely on her at all.

'Did he give up because of what I said yesterday?'

...

When the group was done running, the P.E. teacher gave them free time. The boys invited Alex to play Basketball with them, but Alex declined.

Firstly he needed to observe Rachel and right now she was tired from running, making her more vulnerable at the moment. Lastly, Alex didn't know how to play Basketball, he would only be a liability to any team he joined.

The group of boys misunderstood this as Alex just wanting to have some alone time with his girlfriend. The group of boys approached Oliver and asked him instead. Oliver looked at Alex and Rachel's direction, he gave the two a thumbs up and smiled. Rachel also misunderstood Alex's actions as him wanting to spend more time with her.

Rachel sat in the shade of the tree near the school field, Alex followed after her like a loyal dog. The two sat down side by side. There were no words only silence as a gentle breeze blew by, the two simply looked at their classmates playing happily. Some of the girls who noticed the two felt a bit giddy seeing the two so close to each other, It was as if they had a world of their own.

The silence continued for a while before Alex spoke. "It's so peaceful."

"Why did you suddenly say that?" Rachel asked Alex interested why he would say such a line at this moment.

Alex was caught by surprise by another of Rachel's questions. "Nothing it's just that sitting here with you watching the clouds while looking at our classmates having fun feels really peaceful to me."

Alex spoke while looking at the clouds and feeling the wind brush his skin. The sky he saw before was so different from the one he was looking at right now. The sky he always saw was filled with smoke, the birds were made of metal and would drop bombs that exploded. Every second was filled with tension unlike now it was truly peaceful.

Hearing Alex's answer and the way he continued to look at the clouds made Rachel think that it really was a peaceful day.

So much of this chapter has been changed from the original Adopted Soldier.
