A Simple Fisherman in RWBY
Chapter 01
- Argenti Ovans –
"Oh! Young Argen, I didn't expect to see you here so early in the morning." Said an older man on his foldable chair, holding his fishing rod at ease as he saw me coming.
I smiled at him as I arrived at a popular fishing spot on Patch Island for avid fishermen. "Hello, Grandpa Max! I just came from Uncle Sam's shop with new baits!"
I strolled toward Grandpa Max's fishing spot and looked at his bucket. It was filled with small fish, but I could also see three average-sized fish. It seems like Grandpa Max had a nice day.
"Hey, you caught some nice fish!" I exclaimed as I dropped my fishing gear beside him and rolled my shoulder. I was slightly exhausted from walking from the shop to the small fishing spot.
"He he! You have very great eyes, Argenti! I even got way more fish than that old bat." Laughed Max as he glanced at his old friend, who was not far from them, with a sneer.
"I'm sure if you were to go to that guy, he wouldn't have any fish with him, or his catch wouldn't be able to compare to mine!"
"Hahaha… Of course, Grandpa Max." I said with a stiff smile. I knew that Grandpa Max was very proud of his fishing skills. So, it would not be suitable for me if I didn't let him brag a little. He was a very stubborn man but very lovable.
"Young Argenti, are you fishing here? I can make you some space." Said Max as he prepared to move his bag to make me someplace beside him.
However, I quickly stopped him from doing anything. "Ah no, don't worry! I already have a place in mind! I found a great place yesterday when I came here last night."
Max looked surprised. "Oh, truly? Then I'm waiting for your great news! I've been fishing in this place for as long as 50 years! Maybe you can surprise me with your mysterious spot."
"Also, don't go too far, all right? I heard some Grimm were running around!" warned Grandpa Max with a seriousness that surprised me.
My face frowned as I heard the warning and thought of those dangerous beasts. I wasn't unfamiliar with those monsters that threatened the survival of humanity. I learned about them when I went to school at Signal Academy.
The Grimms were terrifying beasts that stalked the majority of Remnant. They were described as "creatures of destruction" in my books. Fortunately, they were beasts that lacked soul, so those Grimm could not use aura. They were also known to be drawn toward negative emotions such as jealousy, grief, loneliness, hatred and fear.
Fortunately, humanity didn't fall too severely under such threat as a new profession emerged to fight against those monsters that harmed humanity. And we call those people Huntsmen and Huntresses!
They are a group of elite warriors dedicated to slaying the Creatures of Grimm whose duty is to "uphold the peace" of our world. As for me? I didn't follow such paths since I wasn't honestly quick on my feet or had any real motivation to fight against it.
But I was good enough to defend myself from your average Grimms since I did train at Signal Academy, after all.
I didn't have such a dream to fight Grimm. They were scary for little old me, and I didn't plan to waste my second life fighting those beasts! I came here to relax, not to stress my ass off. So after I finished school at Signal Academy, I didn't go for the specialized Huntsman Academy but a far more ordinary one.
Not that it mattered anymore since I dropped out of school soon after I enrolled. As for why I would do such a thing? Well… I gained an interesting semblance that I finally managed to awaken after obtaining my aura since I went to Signal Academy.
It's not like I became a fisherman by choice but more as It was related to my semblance. I called it Fishy! Fishy! WoW! Yeah, not really. I was too lazy to think of a name, but allegedly, I could fish some cool stuff from various worlds.
Yes, it was cool, but it would be even cooler IF I did catch something! It was already my second week since I started my new career as a fisherman, yet all I caught were some average fish you could find in this pond or junk.
So, I was very disappointed and started thinking that my semblance had bamboozled me.
God, I hope not, or it would indeed suck if I were to go back to school… Honestly, I didn't want more time at school in this second life.
So I am here again to try my semblance once more to verify this new ability of mine and also make more money by fishing some fish and then selling them at the market. Did I forget that I had no parents? No? Yeah, well, they died before I arrived in this new world, and fortunately, I had some savings and a house. I also had some great neighbours who helped me settle in. So now I must make money if I don't want to starve or poor.
"Don't worry! I'll return with a bucket full of fish and won't go too far!" I said proudly as I moved slowly toward my fishing spot.
I waved goodbye to Grandpa Max as I faded into the distance. I strolled away from the popular fishing spot. My steps led me farther until I encountered a small, secluded pond. A strange excitement poured through my entire body. I quickened my pace as my heartbeat rose with a sense of anticipation I couldn't quite understand.
This place held a strange connection with my entire being, surpassing even the bustling hotspot where Grandpa Max and the others cast their lines.
I approached the hidden pond in stride and carefully set down my fishing gear. As I unfolded my chair and settled in, the familiar routine of preparing my equipment calmed down my excitement. I retrieved my collapsible fishing rod and Uncle Sam's tackle box from my bag, brimming with an assortment of baits.
I silently selected a worm and hooked the bait on my hook with my fingers moving with practiced precision. With a deep breath, I cast my line into the pond and watched intently as the bobber descended into the water.
At that moment, surrounded by the quietness of the area, I felt a deep connection to this hidden pond as I naturally closed my eyes. I felt so at peace that I almost fell into the world of dreams. I steadily held my fishing rod and waited for the magic to happen.
I waited and waited and continued to wait as I felt a weird feeling coursing through my whole body. Somehow, I knew what had happened as I instinctively poured my aura out of my body toward my fishing rod.
A tranquil hum filled the air as my fishing rod became cloaked in a mesmerizing blue aura. My aura reserve slowly drained, yet I knew I had to maintain this connection. Yet what captivated me was the appearance of a minuscule vortex surrounding the bobber. As I channelled more and more aura into my rod, the tiny whirlpool expanded, drawing even more of my aura.
My breath quickened, matching the pace of my rapidly depleting aura reserves. It was an exhausting experience, yet an intriguing one. I persisted, maintaining the link with my fishing rod until my strength gave away, and I collapsed into my chair after a few more breaths.
I let out a grin as I knew my chance was finally here. It was about time for my semblance to shine after a few failures!
I suddenly felt a tug on my rod as I caught my breath. I quickly held onto it with my remaining strength. I promptly stood up from my chair and pulled back with all my force until I fell onto the ground.
[SPLASH!]
I was now on the ground and looking at the sky in thought as I felt my exhaustion… I should train my body again, as what had just happened made me feel pathetic.
As I was lost in my thoughts, I faintly heard the sound of a familiar creature, and I began to tense up.
"Mudkip, mudkip"
"Huh?" I muttered as I recognized the sound, and my heartbeat accelerated.
There is no way, right…?
"Mudkip!"
I suddenly felt a slight tap on my cheek as I saw a blue creature blocking my vision. I quickly stood up as I saw the mysterious creature… or should I say Pokémon?
"Mudkip!" said the Pokémon, who gave me a radiant smile.
So, my semblance was real…
Neat.

[Semblance: Fishy! Fishy! WoW!]
Argenti can create a portal to another world within a body of water, depending on the area. He can maintain that connection of the world with the more aura used during the expansion of the portal.
(The quality of the world depends on the fishing spot)
[A/N: I'm unsure if I worded or explained the semblance correctly, but TLDR: the better the spot, the better the world he can fish in. Don't think too much about it, just fishing gacha.]
