“It took two days to get my office back in some semblance of order. By then, he was back at his place, locked down tight with a case of booze his only company, the first of many cases, if I don’t miss my bet.”
“What did you geniuses do to try to get through to him?”
“How well do you know Van, Rico? I know you’re friends but beyond that…?”
“I know his history,” Rico told her. “I know he was a loner who never opened up to anyone until just recently. I know we were beyond surprised when he let Ginna into his life, and his heart.”
“Then I suspect you know that talking to him, which we’ve all tried to do, hasn’t worked. He didn’t even come to her funeral.”
Stuart broke in to say, “Not quite true, no one sawhim there. That doesn’t mean he wasn’t there. Remember, he only showed up at his father’s funeral long enough to say a brief goodbye to him at the gravesite.”
“Have you kept an eye on her grave to see if he’s visited it since the funeral?”
