Chapter 3

“Does he know you’re in love with him?” Dr. Manning asked quietly.

“I’m not!”

Dr. Manning’s brow quirked.

“Anymore,” Gabe finished.

“I never really was, at least it doesn’t feel like that now. I don’t know it was a high school crush that crashed and burned before it could go anywhere. I haven’t seen Chase in a few years, even though we both never left town. I just need to be there, as his friend and for his family’s sake.”

“Okay,” Dr. Manning agreed. “We’re going in, in thirty minutes.” Dr. Manning walked to the door and Gabe couldn’t help but admire him even more. Most doctors would have told him to sit back and fuck off, but Dr. Manning had a real heart when it came to his patients. Not your typical surgeon. A team player.

He didn’t have much time to get ready to scrub in and he’d have to drink some coffee if he was going to make it through. Luckily he had forty winks before the phone call came.
