Matilda was making rounds in the mansion when she realised she didn't see Lilly anywhere. She decided to go check in the kitchen cause that's where she liked being most. The kitchen was as busy as everyday, the girl wasn't in the kitchen either. She went to Rose since that was the only person Lilly had close to a friend.
"Rosemary have you seen Lillian today?" Matilda liked using people's full names.
"No, I haven't. I thought you gave her a task elsewhere. You don't know where she is?" Matilda shook her head. "Maybe she's lost. She told me she still doesn't know how to find her way around the mansion or maybe she's in her room. Have you checked her room?"
"I don't think she's lost. I'll go check her room." Matilda made her way to the servant's quarters. She knocked lightly on Lilly's bedroom door and heard a soft 'yes' come from inside. She opened it then entered and found the girl sitting on the corner of the bed. She looked fine but Matilda wondered why she was willingly calling for punishment.
"Why are you still here Lillian? Dont you know we need all the hands we can have today? The lord is going to have very important guests today." Lilly knew that but she couldn't go out there.
"I know that ma'am but.." Lilly trailed off thinking of how to put what she wanted to say.
"But what Lilly?" Lilly didn't realise that Matilda used the short form for her name, something she never did with the maids.
"I.I...I don't know how to put it in words." Matilda just stared at her as she got up from the bed and started walking towards the small window. She stood there waiting for her to tell what was on her mind. "Can I ask you something?" said Lilly turning to face the older woman who nodded her head.
"Is it true that vampires have a strong sense of smell?"
"Yes, why do you ask?"
"Can they smell blood? Even if it were just a drop?"
"Yes, but I dont see how that has anything to do with why you are still in here." The curiosity of this little girl sometimes worried her. Why would she want to know about the vampires now? Lilly looked a bit worried after hearing that vampires can smell even the tiniest bit of blood. "What is it child? You can tell me" Matilda saw that something was bothering her.
"Well you see I, I.... its embarrassing." Lilly went to sit on the bed again. Matilda followed her and sat down next to her.
"You dont have to be embarrassed. How will I know what the matter is if you won't tell me? Come on you have to tell me in older for me to help you." Matilda had a soft spot for Lilly, not because the lord had a soft spot for her but because she was so much like her daughter. She missed her so much.
"Okay I'll tell you." Matilda placed a hand on her shoulder to show that she was listening and it reminded Lilly of Grace. She would always place her hands on Lilly's shoulders whenever something bothered her. "Well you see... it's.. it..its that t,time of the month." Lilly looked down at her hands on her lap feeling embarrassed.
Matilda laughed at how adorable she looked when she was shy. She really reminded her of her daughter. Maybe if she were still here they would have been good friends.
Lilly looked at Matilda with wide eyes and surprise all over her face. It was the fist time seeing Matilda smile, let alone laugh. She always kept her face straight and void of any emotion. She looked beautiful with a smile on her face like this.
"Okay you can stay in here today. I'll asks Rose to come check if you need anything after every two hours." Matilda chuckled then said to herself "You're just like her." But Lilly heard her.
"Just like who?" She wasn't sure who Matilda was talking about but she wanted to know who she meant.
"My daughter. You two are so much alike."
"Where is she?" Matilda took in a deep breath then looked ahead of her.
"She and my husband were brutally murdered by those blood suckers. I was supposed to die there with them but the lord saved me. He was sorry he showed up too late before he could save my family. But I'm forever grateful to him for saving me and erasing those murders from the face of the earth."
"Oh, I'm sorry about your family."
"Its alright child." Matilda got up from the bed and headed for the door. As she was about to open the door, she heard Lilly speak.
"Uhm Matilda?" She turde around with her brows raised. "Could you not uhm.. could you not tell the lord the real reason why I'm not helping?"
"Your asking me to lie?"
"I think so." Lilly knew that it was a bad idea but she couldn't imagine how embarrassed she would be if Davin was to find out about what was happening to her. Surprisingly Matilda smiled and gave her a nod then turn around.
"Matilda?" She turned again to hear what the girl wanted this time around. "You should smile often. You look beautiful when you smile." Matilda couldn't help but give a wider smile
"My daughter also used to say that."
"She wasn't lying." They both smiled at each other and Matilda left Lilly alone in the room. She went to check if breakfast was ready in the kitchen. Everything was set, what was left was setting it on the table. They had to wait till the guests arrived. Luckily Bethany and the others left three days ago so they didn't have to worry about getting another maid having a broken wrist or worse.
Davin asked Matilda to give Lilly very light tasks like dusting his study room or the living room so she wouldn't put pressure on her wrist. He also wanted her to be present when he had his meals.
Davin was in his study room looking at the reports of the missing people. Even after telling the kings to take precautionary measures the numbers kept rising. Something like this had happened before he became the king. Back then it was the stupid vimpires who believed that drinking as much blood as possible from humans gave them more power and strength.
Humans were so scared to even walk during the day and that brought down prosperity of the land. Poverty struck and many people died due to starvation than vampire attacks.
Davin wondered why these people where missing and only a few bodies where found. He heard the sound of carriages enter the gates of his mansion and he stood up from his chair. He made his way to the front door and stood there waiting for his guests to come out of their carriage.
The coachman opened the door of the carriage. First came out a man who looked like he was in his late forties then a young lady who looked no more than twenty five. They both wore expensive looking clothes. They made their way to where Davin was standing.
"King Eris, you have finally arrived." said Davin as they shook hands.
"Lord Davin, its so nice of you to have us." Davin then turned to the lady with king Eris. He reached for one of her gloved hands and his lips made contact with the back of her hand and this made the girl blush.
"Princess Xena, its so nice of you to accompany your father here." The girl gave him a smile and curtseyed.
"Well father always complains that he gets lonely on his lone journeys, so I thought I would keep him company this time around."
"Its good to know that the old man had such a beautiful lady to keep him company."
Davin smiled at the two vimpires in front of him.
They went inside the mansion and Davin told them that breakfast would be set in a few minutes. They went to change their clothes and came down to the dining hall. it was just the three of them.
Davin noticed that Lilly wasn't among the waiting maids in the dining. He told Matilda to always put her among them even if she wasn't doing anything at the table. Why wasn't she there? wondered Davin.
They finished their meal and the guests went to the rooms they were assigned to to rest as they had a long and tiring journey. Davin went back to his study and called for Matilda. She came shortly after a guard was sent to call her.
Matilda knew that the king wanted to ask about the little human girl. She wondered if she should really lie about why the girl was still in her room. She decided to do so because she had already told the girl that she would.
She knocked at the door and entered after being told. She found Davin holding a book in his hand. She then went to stand behind the chairs which were in front of the desk.
"You sent for me milord." Davin took his eyes off the book to look at Matilda.
"Yes, I did." He paused and signaled her to take a sit. Matilda and Lilly were the only servants to ever sit down on those chairs. "I wanted to know why I haven't seen the little human anywhere today?" Davin was straight forward. He knew Matilda noticed that he was getting attached to the girl so he didn't have to bit around the bush.
"Well you see uhm... she..she finished her chores and said her wr,wrist started hurting again so I uhm told her go rest." She scolded herself for not coming up with a better lie. And why did she always stammer when she told a lie?
"Big. Fat. Lie."
