I didn’t have to listen to the conversation that Emily had on the phone with the detective to know that something was wrong. I sensed it the moment he opened his mouth on the other end. Wolves had that intuition. It was what raised our hackles and kept us alert and always guarded. If we let our guard down, we left ourselves open for other less honorable wolves or people to attack.

Her family’s coffee shop had apparently caught fire and the detective was being awfully withdrawn and cross about it, especially when she asked if her grandfather was alright. It was why I had gotten out of bed and dressed when I did.
