The Guild

"Couldn't you have gotten some more normal clothes?"

Kage went to the tailor and got me some clothes. He brought back a white long-sleeve dress shirt, a formal midnight blue colored vest, some fingerless gloves, black slim trousers, and vintage leather boots.

"I just wanted the best for my master. The vest and the trousers are enchanted with magic resistance, blade resistance, and blunt damage resistance. The gloves and the boots boost your physical attacks."

Ahh, so he bought them because of what they are able to do. Listening to all that actually makes me proud of him.

Now if only he was wearing the same thing as me, cause I look a bit edgy but he looks even edgier. He had a black sleeveless vest on and his coat was tied around his waist. Since there was a bath in this inn, he went to take it since he didn't take a single bath in... what, weeks? Not only that, but he also cut his hair. His hair was swept to the side, some covering his right eye. The side where the hair wasn't swept was cut. So he looked even more emo. A bit weird to have an emo servant.

Anyway, back to my clothing. Since I heard all the positive effects, I started to wonder...

"Are there any negative effects?"

"No sir, they are all completely positive effects. I've double-checked them and they are all safe."

"Ahh, that's great."

"But they aren't completely resistance, they just reduce the amount of damage you receive."

"Oh, well, that's all right."

They felt really light when I wore them. Well, not like they are metal armor or that stuff.

Blade Resistance [+50%]

Blunt Attack Resistance [+50%]

Ooo~ A fifty percent increase in resistance, huh? Now that's what I like to see. The physical attack percentage is alright as well.

As I exited my room, Luna was staring at me very suspiciously.

"Are you really Noctem?"

I sigh. How many times do I have to tell this girl?

"Yes, I am really Noctem."

"Hmm..."

Her eyes wandered all over the place, then she reddened up a bit and looked away.

"Anyway, let's head to the guild."

She quickly speed-walked down the hall. I looked at Kage and he shrugged.

***

We had some breakfast before we headed out. The old man was pretty surprised at how different I looked and tried offering me a drink, but I said I can't drink. Truth is, I don't know what age counts as underage in this world until I saw Kage drink it whole. I don't know how old he is, so I asked him. He said he was 18. Guess 18 is the age that you can drink. I kind of wanted to try, but I'm faithful to the rules in my previous life. No drinking till 21.

We walked through town until we reached the guild. It was a large two-story building. It was called the "Dark Ivory" guild. I don't know what the master of the guild was thinking when he was thinking of a name' cause those two terms don't mix well with each other. Well, not like I can judge as I can't even make a good guild name.

The large doors were already open, so we just walked in. The first floor of the guild was a restaurant, at it was big. It wasn't lively, but there were a bunch of rowdy people. Besides that, it was pretty peaceful. We walked up to the lady who looks like she was in her twenties at the reception desk, and she gave us a radiating smile.

"Hello, may we register to the guild?"

"Yes, certainly. Are those people with you?"

"Yes, they are."

We waved at her, and she nodded her head.

"Alright. Before I register you folks to the guild, I will explain some details. Do you mind?"

"Not at all."

So basically, guild members are given ranks that allow them to do a quest that suits their level. If you're a D-rank member, you do D-rank missions. If you're a C-rank member, you do C-rank missions. If you're a B-rank member... well, you get the idea.

The highest rank is S-rank. And this guild has only three S-ranks. But they are hardly ever present since they are always busy on missions. Well, I just hope I don't run into them because I'm probably only a D-rank.

Then she talked about what happened if we failed a task. If we failed a task, we'd have to pay double the amount that the reward offered. She pointed to an enormous billboard with several papers on it. I'm guessing those were the tasks that we'd have to do. She said that new tasks will be posted each day or two. I think I'm going to stick with the low rewarding quests as I don't want to pay double the amount for something I failed to do. Well, not that I'm not complaining since it makes sense. Then more various things were said, but that didn't matter.

"So, do you have any questions?"

We shook our heads, and she smiled.

"Great, here are your registration forms."

She handed a form to each of us and when I took one glance at it and it didn't have much. It just had a bunch of terms and conditions and all that stuff. At the bottom was where we had to sign our signature.

After we signed them and handed them in, she took out three black cards and then chants something similar to an incantation. Later, she handed us a knife, and we were told to drop blood on it attentively. She told us to just do a little prick as she doesn't want blood spilling everywhere.

I went first and took hold of the knife. I'd inspect the knife and place the pointy end on my finger, then as I pushed it in, it was as if I just hit steel.

The lady tilted her head in confusion, and I gulped. So even though the effect of [Impenetrable Skin] is greatly reduced, it can still protect me from simple metal weapons like this knife. But since I am unable to prick my fingers, the only way I can do that is... well...

[Jab] it...

Or I can just use [Lacerate]. But not with this.

I politely placed the knife on the table.

"Umm, I think I'll need something harder than that."

"Oh, tough skin? My father has the same condition."

Then she sighed.

"I guess I'll have to resort to that."

"To... that?"

She took the knife away and then reached under the desk. Then, she pulled out a large berserker-like sword. My jaw dropped as I saw the size of that thing.

"Here, use this to prick your finger."

Prick my finger? More like cut it off, I ain't using that thing.

"Hehe, I think I'll just use my own weapon."

"Oh, alright."

I took out Koshiro from my storage, and the lady gave me a surprised look. As I unsheathed it, the blade gave off a red glint, and I placed the tip of the blade on my finger. The blade easily cut through my skin. It stung a bit, but it wasn't much. When I pressed the card with that finger, silver characters slowly began surfacing.

"This is your guild card. If you manage to lose it, it is enchanted to return to you. Let me show you."

The lady took out her guild card and threw it out the door. A few seconds later, the guild card began floating, and it returned to the lady's hand.

What an amazing mechanism. Though it might be a bit useless for me as I can just store it in my [Storage], but nonetheless, it is impressive.

"That's the end of your registration. If you see a quest that you would like to do on the board, please register it at the registration board."

She then bowed and wished us a good day. I inspected the card, and it displayed our name and our ranks.

[Dark Ivory - Noctem - Rank: D]

It's pretty straightforward and easy to understand. I asked Kage and Luna the ranks that they received, and they all got the same rank as me. Guess everyone starts at rank D when they begin.

Walking up to the task board, there weren't many good quests. Most of them involved delivering stuff and all that. All the fighting tasks were all for our higher ranking seniors. I guess we'll have to work with this for now.

"Let's see, deliver a letter to the ranch, 2 silver coins. Deliver a package to the ranch, 4 silver coins. Damn it, all of these are delivery jobs!"

I scratched my head in frustration and sighed. Well, no physically active quests today. These are boring jobs, but they do offer a good amount. Though I don't know how money works in this world, I'm guessing a gold coin is a hundred US dollars and a silver coin is a ten-dollars. Well, there is always tomorrow.

"This might do."

Luna said, and I looked towards her direction. Did she find a good job?

"What is it?"

"Subjugate 5 silver barbed wolves and bring back their tails."

"What's the reward?"

"9 silver coins."

9 silver, huh? That's a decent amount. How much is that? 90 US dollars?

"Location?"

"West forest."

"Alright, let's do it. It's better than all these others."

And while I'm at it, I can absorb their souls and add them to my spectral army.
