Evan smiled unpleasantly at the trio before him. “I was angry when I found out that my parents purposely deceived everyone about my birth. I thought they had stolen my birthright from me. But now that I look at you all, I see what a gift they gave me.” Evan gathered up his documents. “It’s been truly enlightening, and I appreciate your showing me just what I was lucky enough to miss.” He sketched a mocking bow and sailed serenely out of the house, ignoring the outraged shouts of Colin Dwyer that he hadn’t been dismissed.

She took her seat again at the table. “He was watching us—me, Carrie and Becky. Just sitting at the bar and staring. But then he started following Becky around and kept asking her if she’d show him the grounds. She couldn’t get rid of him. I mean, it was kind of fun for a while—you know, dodging him, making up weird excuses to leave. But it got a little scary.” Katie shuddered dramatically. “He is just a total creep. And even if Mother is mad, I’m still glad Evan punched him. And if he comes near any of us again, I’m going to kick him where it’ll hurt the most.” She viciously stabbed a shrimp and popped it in her mouth.

The dessert was dark and tall, wrapped in thick chocolate ganache, the layers separated by an inch of chocolate mousse. Evan put a generous forkful into his mouth and paused as the flavor rolled across his tongue. Rich, bittersweet, laced with espresso. It tasted of decadence and luxury—the ultimate comfort food. “Oh, my Lord, this is incredible!” Somehow he had to smuggle a piece to Lacey.

Wrapped in a towel, he came out of the bathroom to find that a dinner tray had been set up on a fold-out side table. A huge, domed silver cover, big enough to house a rack of lamb, sat in the center of the tray. A stack of crackers and a bottle of water were on one side. Well, the Carmodys didn’t do things by halves. He removed the ornate cover and burst out laughing. Chicken noodle soup. And next to it was a note that read, “Sleep well. We’ll raid the kitchen after the detective leaves.” It was signed with a “D.”

“That’s quite a temper you have, and it led you to do this.” The detective waved his arm at the damage. “But know this, Dwyer—I’m not done with this investigation. I don’t care what you did to your own belongings, but filing a false police report is a crime.”

Having resolved nothing, Evan gave up and went home to his apartment. After a shower and a change of clothes, he drove to the restaurant. All the way there he lectured himself to be polite, to restrain his temper and to do whatever he could to get in Danny’s good graces. And wanting to win Danny over, well, that was purely a tactical decision. It had absolutely nothing to do with those beautiful brown eyes.
