In physics, "cold" does not exist as a fundamental physical substance or form of energy. Just as darkness is simply the absence of light, cold is simply the absence of heat. The Physics of TemperatureWhat Heat Is: Heat is the transfer of thermal energy. All matter is made of atoms and molecules that are constantly jiggling and moving. Temperature is simply a measurement of this average kinetic energy. The "Flow": Energy always moves from areas of higher energy (warmer objects) to areas of lower energy (cooler objects). When you touch an ice cube and feel "cold," your hand is actually losing its heat energy to the ice. You cannot "add coldness" to a room; you can only remove the heat. The Limit of Cold. Because cold is defined by a lack of energy, it has a definitive floor: Absolute Zero (0K or -273.15 °C). This is the coldest possible temperature in the universe. At this point, atoms and molecules have lost all their kinetic energy and virtually stop moving. While scientists can get extremely close to Absolute Zero in highly controlled lab settings, the laws of thermodynamics prevent you from actually reaching or dropping below it.
