The author's UI doesn't show user replies, so here I am 2 months late. But Rhyhorn too is not a rare pokemon. Let's say if Zubat is common, Rhyhorn is uncommon. The reason he didn't take a Rhyhorn was as mentoined, don't like tanks as they are nearly useless if their opponent has a typing that counters them. And more world buidling will help you understand on why felt like he has to choose Zubat.

The matches are supposed to introduce trainers to being centre of attention where he will judged for every mistake he commits and if you dial it up to top. As a commander in war everyone in the city and your troops will judge you, mistakes aren't tolerated. The use of mic was kept like that so the trainers can slowly get accustomed to pressure of expectations and strategies. (this is an extreme example, but sometimes you have to lose a battle(audience getting angry aka some trainers death) to win the war(get the gym badge aka defend then wall)

I was trying to make it suspicious as people don't ignore things like glowing eyes, but it seems i failed. as mentioned in my above comments reply, the glowing eye makes rational, a machine type of rationality you can say if he gets too emotional.

It's more of an effect that turns him extremely rational to ignore big things that he can't change and concentrates on things he can influence, he doesn't know that though

Zubat escapes not at night but when the sun peaks in the sky(yk heat is high, Zubat is a cave Pokemon) and the mc forgot about the disadvatages if echolocation of zubat(not author (T - T)) which he will find later.
