both are his names, the narrator uses Gates when the mc is thinking or when he is viewed from his perspective...and Amon is a name that the entire character of the book know him as. Amon Gates in this sense is his name and family name respectively...but Gates was known as Gates Amon in his own world...hope this is understandable.
