You are would think he would try his hand in Alchemy, Arrays etc to boost his progress.

Nothing unexpected with MC who just came into money. Money and intelligence do not equate to wisdom... Not to mention being chased by gangsters. He has a lot going on and realizes too late that he's wearing a track suit.
