the freak show is metaphorical. people living in times like the middle ages and the renaissance had fascination for people with disability or disfigured body who are called freaks and people would pay them to watch them perform, even just to get the sight of them, hence the term "freak show". similarly, the crowd formed due to an "unusual spectacle", that being the three knights belonging to a powerful regiment. it was their first time meeting such "honorable knights", they were fascinated at them who were simply standing, hence it seemed to be a freak show.
