He had initially tried to refuse the order given to him to kill Oscar but the new leader threatened to kill Alex's family if he didn't do it. Alex was also made aware that he wouldn't be allowed to leave the gang either, his family being used as a threat once again.

Not to mention this same guy was one of those quiet kids in the school, he wasn't even a bully. That's right, he was just retaliating against an actual bully out of anger, the kid on the floor was the actual bully. The glasses on the floor back then belonged to the quiet kid and that was also why nobody interfered in the beatdown.
