I don't understand why you are all so mad he cut off the conversation. He answers her questions, he didn't lie and said the truth. He just decided, he didn't want to talk about it anymore. On top of that it's not the place to do it. They are in the middle of a monster's forest and the rain has stopped so they are moving. Plus, if he were to ask Maxi, she would have lie or change the subject. At least he talks even if it's just a little

Because it's a question of safety, no time to believe someone. You are either a strength or a burden. I wouldn't bring anyone with me if I was going to war based on their words alone 🤷 Plus everytime she faced danger she either fainted, throw up, freeze or depleted her mana. She doesn't have a good record 😂

He then scooped her into his arms, blanket and all, and sat down on the bed. Ignoring Maxi's flailing legs, he placed her on his knees and cupped her face with his hands. She felt his tongue licking up the tears that had welled up in the corners of her eyes. His warm breath tickled her cheeks and lips, distracting her enough to stop weeping. He wound an arm around her waist and let out a deep sigh.
