So, the stats one has at birth are determined by a myriad of factors, although many of them come back to one's parents. If one's parents had high stats, one tends to inherit higher stats. Also, there is a stat minimum for every evolutionary stage, colloquially named tiers. Humans, for example, are tier 3. The third evolutionary stage. Similarly, other tier 3 species would be bears, wolves, etc.

"God damn it, I swear I'd kill for thumbs." Currently, Mercury's equipment was half strewn across the floor, since he was not very good at handling it with his paws oftentimes. His map was a little smudged, but he could tell he was just a few days away from the capital.

It does! It lets him throw things. His anatomy doesn't allow it, so the Skill is adjusted to still let him throw things! Plus it's kinda funny soooo xD
Huh. This was… useful. Though the true question really was just how it would work. He couldn't exactly pick stuff up, so time to try it out then. He quite simply walked out from the log with a large yawn another stretch, feeling a slight, dull pain at his ribs. It would pass anyways, so no need to pay it any mind. He walked forward a few steps before he found a chip of bark on the floor, barely bigger than his own paw. For a moment he just looked at it, before letting out a slight sigh. His best idea was really just to put his paw on it and use the Skill, so probably time to try that out. <Throw>!
