well this novel doesn't really explain anything so...

well the hand to hand could've evolved to the master combatant (maybe even the gun skills as it would kinda make sense)

also even with business skill it wouldn't do much as during this time racism was real bad so he wouldn't be able to put it to much use

well with the engineering skill he can make his own plane/helicopter and he would need to learn how to pilot

I get what your saying but if the author of a novel runs out of ideas/creativity I would say to take a break instead of trying to push through. Because pushing on without much creativity/ideas can make a story dull/boring/lifeless. I'm not saying give up but a break is nice to do. But sadly this story is dropped
