He is considered a genius in the weakest city on the continent. It's like a city of 400 people considering one of the residents a genius just for having traveled to the capital and returned knowing how to read.

It is actually very lucky, since it is difficult for a slave to survive for a long time, being ostilized by everyone from rival students to the Overseers themselves, even more so being an alien.
