Why do I always picture her as a headless chicken screaming
Pfff
Most of the face-slapping stories of unknown geniuses that I’ve read can all be regarded as bland compared to this one. Contrasting many of those novels, these characters are lovable and have genuine emotions that fit the moment. The main character, while having the Mary Sue traits of high intelligence and do-it-all skillsets, a hallmark of a face-slapping novel, she remains remarkably human and does not lose this humanity to absurd plot devices. It even comes off often as a parody for how different and (relatively) grounded the characters’ reactions are. I picked this up thinking it would be a fun “whatever” read and ended up truly enjoying this.
This is a story that I would only ever recommend for a quick read and not one for a particularly laudable storyline. It isn’t a terrible story. It just has the potential to be better. The plot, setting, and characters are underdeveloped. There is little buildup to events, creating the feeling of a story that only does good on jumping from plot point to plot point, which in turn lessens any empathy or connection the reader may hold for the characters.
