Only thing I'll say is dial down the repetition and trust your readers to grasp your concepts. This may not be my genre but spotted one of your comments somewhere advertising it. Honestly I considered this. But in a society where they value strength, and need more strong individuals, I figured it made sense to save them if there was no clear winner. They'll have to go through the trial again when new Clawling candidates appear. So, they'll either benefit from the draw by being smarter or stronger. Or they'll die against the new candidates, and prove someone else worthy.
