or they could go the easier route amd just have those parts of his memory TEMPORARILY suppressed so they can start the base of their story, and as the story progresses they can introduce those memories and boom. another story line and easy character points.
but its easy character development and plot. it adds an entirely new aspect to the story in itself if the character has to mourn their previous life as well as come to accept that their old life is gone. it also lets them tackle relationships beyond just loyal, love, hatred as the one and only layer. It may be hard, but I think if writing is always easy, you'll never get better.
