They're talking about the house. "it was in itself a very large estate which had swallowed up hundreds of other estates its size" means that the house itself swallowed up hundreds of other estates? That doesn't make sense. "it was itself, in a very large estate which had swallowed up hundreds of other estates its size" means that the house is within a larger property that had swallowed up other properties.
