I think the center is a safe zone(although the dwarf did get infected there at least once, so not super safe)

I guess his magic is so strong , he feels no challenge from fights . And challenge is what grows life essence. Others who practice both have weaker magic so life essence can still grow from fighting opponents who are at magic+lifeEssence
