I will play devil's advocate here and say from another point of view, he seemed to know who the mc was and was afraid of his strength. Knowing that he comes from a family of hunters, it wouldn't necessarily be a good move to go around biting even more people and making himself a potential target. It's basically up to if he still thinks he can be the strongest or not.
