It’s a stretch, but maybe it’s the gold. 20k gold to a lower ranked noble is likely a very significant sum. Or maybe they are assuming he will be knighted (therfore made noble) and with his close connection to the Stark children, specifically the heir, it could be worth taking the hit in prestige for gains later on. It’s a stretch and still very unlikely tho.
