Shepherd dogs with light-colored fur, white with brown patches, lay in the shade of the houses, their tongues hanging out as they panted in the heat. Whenever Lukas passed by, they would raise their heads, sniff the air, and return to resting. They did not bark. They did not stand up.

Some lifted their heads when Lukas passed by. He was small, far too small to be traveling alone along the road, but they recognized the wolf brooch pinned to his tunic, the symbol of the Dmond family.

Clavor told old family stories, how Lukas's great-grandfather had defeated an invading knight in a duel that lasted three days. How Aurora's grandmother tamed wild horses with nothing but a glance. How the Dmond crest had been forged by a dwarven blacksmith in exchange for a favor that was never collected.

Hand-shaped handles would creep me out...
The facade was simple, almost austere, with no large windows, only small openings high near the ceiling, allowing enough light inside to illuminate the interior without making it dark. The door was a massive double door made of dark wood with silver details, handles shaped like hands, and wrought-iron hinges.
