Definitely an unreliable narrator. Information is limited and there are also, of course, the impacts of propaganda.
I sadly cannot see which paragraph you were commenting on, but one thing I try to employ a lot of is the unreliable narrator. Sometimes, it will be due to bias, and other times, due to lack of information, just like what you were saying. "The brainwashing and distortion of facts."
Frankly, I have to agree with you on many points. A lot of things from the first book will be relevant later in ways that would be spoilers to say, but notwithstanding, I already am rewriting this first book. It will still be the same setting and such, but I plan on making it a lot more interesting. To tell you the truth, I really appreciate this review. It feels the most honest and constructive. I have an AO3 account where I am currently working on a rewritten version since this is 5 year old work back from when I was a Highschool Freshman. Notwithstanding, I appreciate the honesty, but I still hope you stick around. It's good to have honest people reviewing my work.
I'm still debating on whether he'll meet Team Avatar. In mind, I have 2 paths I plan on having the story going down. One that alters the main story and changes things up, and one that is completely separate form the main story so the two could technically work synchronously.
Luke? No. Zhao is a Lieutenant, was demoted to Junior Lieutenant. Boss was a Captain, and really, it won't matter much anymore. There may be some latent respect for those who served in the Fire Nation army, but their authority is gone for the most part.
