While I understand Arthur's thought process, this feels like a "boys will be boys" handwave, and don't appreciate that. Not at all.

Fair point, but I still think he'd take exception to it.
The premise of the story was interesting. I loke yhe protagonist being so cautious and careful. I even enjoyed being introduced to new beasts and monsters, but the last 20 or so chapters really undermined the books positive traits. Cunning immortals became idiots. Events that'd normally take a chapter were glossed over in paragraphs. In the end, none of the important characters were useful or received closure, and we don't even have a real ending. Can you say UNSATISFIED?
