I never said I would thank them, it was their incompetence that let the city (or my family as you say) get into a situation where death and torture was the only outcome, again I would have preferred those who escaped to fight to the death to protect my family because that was their job. -- I never said that killing everyone was the best move to make (they should have saved as many as possible, even if it was only 1 more people), I just said it was the lesser evil, and sadly in this case the one which made the most strategic sense. -- this is a terrible genocide which they committed, I do not like it but in my opinion it was the best option they had, for what could they have done? by what we know there is no way help was going to even come and they had no way of winning the battle. -- this is an ethics debate about mercy killing, i argue that killing of civilians who are destined to die or get tortured for the rest of their lives is morally acceptable if saving them is not otherwise possible.

the way they see it is 99% of the soldiers will certainly die even if they try to escape, only the elite have a chance to survive, and they will still probably wont make it. if there are 3 million in the city and 300,000 are soldiers. that means that only 3,000 have a chance to escape and around 3 million people will die at the hands of the orcs or captured and raped and used as breeding animals. killing 3,000 people who might not necessarily survive anyway to make sure that 3 million people die peacefully and that the enemy dies with them is in my opinion the lesser evil by what we know so far. i would prefer to die with my whole family and town than have them raped and eaten for a chance for me to survive.
