the first mate is usually the right hand man of the captain on a ship i.e. vice-captain - like in the straw hats zoro is luffys first mate
thats fair, haki is indeed stretching it currently and even though the rokushiki would be really useful at the beginning, there's a reason why its one of the most secret martial arts of the marines - before a marine can even begin to learn it they have to be assessed by the higher ups not just on strength but loyalty also - it would be really far fetched for Adriel to somehow start learning the techniques especially since as far as I know there doesn't exist a 'manual' he could fantastically acquire as the techniques are passed down verbally/from master to pupil. Also there's a reason most of the high ranked marines don't even use the techniques - they just don't scale. Like the admirals for example even though they should all know them (being the strongest and all) none of them are seen using the rokushiki, aside from soru maybe and even thats arguable. Trust me he doesn't need marine techniques. But yeah haki's gonna play a major role on his abilities.
