From my understanding, they failed the rescue on their own. They saw the little girl zombie and split their forces to capture her. This caused their main rescue force to be undermanned and die. Had nothing to do with the MC. The MC just stopped their split up force from being able to catch the little girl as well, so they ended up failing both objectives.
