"I pushed him." Danielle mutters and Triston does not seem to comprehend what she is actually trying to say. "What do you mean by you pushed him?" He asks Danielle and she realizes that she muttered it out loud. "Not that I pushed him to die but I mean like I pushed him to become a better person and nicer to me." Danielle responds and brings out a sigh of relief. She does not think that she can let anyone find out that because of her sexual desires with another man her boyfriend and an heir to his mother's generational wealth died. All the news stations would have a blast carrying it but it would destroy the gneb image her family built. Not her family exactly but her father's image would be tarnished. She can not have that happen. Danielle can feel her father roll in the grave. He must truly be disappointed in Danielle.

Before he could continue Flavio felt some little hands on his head which belonged to his baby Bastet who didn't like to hear his father scream so he went straight to his head to stop screaming.

"Oi! Suzy! Why you lookin at me like ya seen a ghost, huh?" Darla rudely called out to Darius when she noticed him stopping suddenly and staring at her.  
Darius also came out from his shocked stupor with a frown, a dangerous glint in his eyes as he observed Darla. This was a woman with either inborn 50 points of Luck, or somehow acquiring some sort of treasure that had greatly boosted her Luck this high.  
Darius had a weird perception of Luck, especially in the world of Faust. Since he recently attributed his ability to find one of the 56 paths to his high Luck, he had begun to understand how important and game-changing the stat was.  
It definitely wasn't as simple as rewarding him with better drops or giving him a high chance for critical hits.  
It had a lot more inexplainable functions that assisted everything else while also doing its own thing to make sure that the possessor of high Luck would survive by some fluke.  
Darius mused that if this were fiction, the Luck value would be basically a character's level of plot armor, a writing device that ensured the story kept going on but protecting the protagonist from death.  
It was different from plot convenience, which was the writing device that allowed protagonists to breeze through various obstacles with ease, finding rare items in places that things should not be or arriving at certain places right around the time an important event would happen.  
For some reason, people tended to merge both concepts into 'plot armor', making Darius wonder if people actually took time to research what they were saying or just babbled what they saw others say.  
Whatever the case, for the sake of the argument, plot armor was essential to a story. It basically kept a protagonist from dying unless he was part of a 'vantage point' style of story featuring multiple perspectives, allowing for the continuation of a story even if one was eliminated.  
Sometimes, the plot armor of the protagonist would rub off on close allies and friends, like the main female lead, his harem members, very important friends, rival turned friends, or other people close to him.  
This was thanks to the protagonist (or could even be to the fans who love the side characters so much), preserving those who logically should not survive the same tribulations.  
So what happened when a 'protagonist' of a story with established plot armor would meet a side character or neutral party with plot armor on the same level as theirs?  
This was the current dilemma Darius was in.  
Naturally, he knew himself to be the 'protagonist' of Faust, and pretending otherwise would be acting intentionally stupid and unnecessarily humble for no reason.  
So this woman, Darla, who had the same amount of Luck as he… what should he do with her? Currently, she was stronger, so this presented variable difficulties.  
Firstly, he could befriend her as he had done for Oliver Frenq. This was his usual go-to option given his mercantile mindset. He did not see the need to antagonize anyone based on the faction they belonged to or based on his emotions and fears. If possible he'd rather turn them into acquaintances over benefits, or friends at a stable level.  
Secondly, he could remain neutral/keep his distance. In order to avoid a clash of interests or power due to their similar Luck, he could just be cold and straightforward without the intention to befriend. This was also a good option since he didn't plan to interact with this woman more than necessary.  
Thirdly, he could try to end her life. While he might not have the power to do so himself, he could either set his undead upon her or try to implement a situation on the battlefield that would lead to her death… but both options were suboptimal, if not impossible.  
She had her other guild members behind her, not to mention she was bound to have other Adept allies in the camp. The priests certainly would use any chance to interfere with him no matter what after Darius would propose his plan tomorrow.  
As for harming her on the battlefield, it was theoretically possible with his Intellect, but not at a level to outright kill her.  
This led right back to the issue bringing all this consideration up, her goddamn high Luck. With a value at that level, it would have to be a situation where no amount of cosmic force could intervene on her behalf.  
Darius kept his eyes on Darla, and ran his mind through his three options, choosing the most beneficial one for now. With a slight exhale, he greeted.  
"Greetings, Lady Darla Brown. I assume you're the one in charge of this particular encampment?"  
Darla grunted. "That's right, 'Sir' Darius Stone. I'm not only in charge of this here encampment, but I'm the vice guildmaster of the main Thieves Guild in Andrato."  
She flicked her dagger lightly, not even bothering to gaze at Darius. "So, what can I do ya for?"  
Darius nodded. "Well, I'm here for two purposes. Business and Friendship."  
Darla paused and actually looked at Darius for a while before she remarked. "Hoh? YOU? A talented mage Adept who can have even the Crown Princess of the ENTIRE kingdom, want to make friends with our lowly Thieves Guild?"  
Darius smiled softly. "That's right. The Thieves Guild might have a bad reputation, but that is for crimes. In terms of business and profitability, you are only matched by the Assassins Guild."  
Darius patted his knees. "Your true value as a group is mostly ignored due to the prejudice by the upper class, though many crawl through the backdoor to seek your help. Hasn't the noble Crown Princess herself used your services not too long ago? I'm just putting away the sickening false pretenses and coming upfront, or is that so strange to you?"  
Darla nodded. "It is, but I dun care enough to pursue it ta be frank whicha."  
Darius frowned, which made Darla laugh. "Dun mind me, m'lord, I 'ave a bad habit of pissing off nobles on account of my low birth ya see."  
Darius rubbed his chin with interest. "No problem, everyone has their quirks. For now, let me begin with my proposal for friendship before we move onto business."  
"Aye, I'm all ears, but jus kno that getting the friendship of the Thieves Guild is as hard as a spanking from the constable heh heh." Darla snickered playfully.  
Understanding her personality now, Darius was unbothered. Instead, he smiled. "I'm sure you've already caught wind of my appraisal abilities. I'm willing to do a free appraisal of up to twenty items for the Thieves Guild as a token of friendship."

Willow thought it odd that he seemed so caring toward Olivia when they were supposedly just working partners. Olivia seemed to cherish each gesture, too. It was like there was a drama being played out that no one else was privy to and Willow really saw no need for the subterfuge. To each their own, she thought.
By the time Patrick returned with their drinks, the gathering seemed to have picked up a little more steam. Other people joined them, authors and readers alike, and everyone stood around sipping their cocktails and sharing stories. Olivia introduced Willow, getting her involved with everyone, making sure she talked as much as she listened. The women who huddled around their table fawned over Patrick, but in a harmless, flirtatious way. Still, it was more than Willow would have been comfortable with if he were her boyfriend, and from everything she witnessed, there was definitely a relationship there that the author and cover model were not admitting. Willow stared at her drink, thinking that, right then, she would love to have a relationship with her favorite author to show off. You have to be able to talk to him first, goofball.
“How’s everyone at this table doing?” Willow heard the familiar voice and her heart leaped from her chest to her throat where it froze, threatening to suffocate her. She forced herself to turn and there stood Benson Taylor smiling at them, a glass of bourbon in his hand. She opened her mouth to say something, but then closed it again, not sure what to say.
Thankfully, Olivia noticed Willow’s quandary and extended her arm to shake Benson’s hand, covering the awkward silence. “We’re doing great here. Willow here has just been telling me about her hometown. She lives in Cocoa Beach.” She smiled pleasantly, ignoring Willow’s dropped jaw.
“Really? What a coincidence. I’m from Cocoa Beach, as well.” After shaking Olivia’s hand, Benson reached out to shake Willow’s and she thought she would faint from that simple touch. “Do you ever make it to any of the author events there?” Benson asked Willow. 
“I try to when I find out about them.” She couldn’t exactly tell him that she had seen him at every event he ever attended, but never managed to say hello to him.
“Well, I hope I get to see you at one. I happen to write science fiction, which I think fits perfectly with the Space Coast. Do you enjoy that genre?” He leaned on the table, his focus off the others and totally attuned to Willow as he toyed with his glass, spinning it absently on the table.
Her dry mouth made her run her tongue over her lips to moisten them enough to speak. He noticed the gesture, his gaze following the curve of her tongue as it glided over her lips. “I enjoy all genres actually. I’ve read all your books, to be honest. I think they’re great.”
“Really? That’s awesome. You’ve just made my weekend.”
The Cupid Shuffle started blaring through the speakers and out of the corner of her eye, Willow watched Trisha drag Olivia out onto the makeshift dance floor. Willow watched them leave, not worried about being left behind with her favorite author, but rather glad that the others left her alone to soak in his company. Ginger, the tall blonde Willow witnessed spanking Patrick at the book signing earlier, stayed off to the side, her hands clawing all over Patrick. By the second song, he seemed to finally have had enough and said he was turning in for the evening. Not surprising, Ginger suddenly felt like retiring for the evening herself. Willow didn’t say anything. She knew Olivia would have a mess on her hands if she didn’t nip that attraction in the bud soon.
“So, what do you do in Cocoa Beach?” Benson asked, his smile dancing in his eyes.
She shrugged. “Nothing as exciting as being a writer. I work for a data entry company. We do medical transcripts.”
He nodded, smiling as if it was the most exciting work he had ever heard. They continued to talk until the Electric Slide took over the dance floor. “How about it?” Benson asked as he pointed to the floor with the tilt of his head. “Like to dance? I mean, it’s not a party unless we dance, right?” He extended his hand in an open invitation and she couldn’t believe what was happening. From not even being able to talk to the man to him escorting her out onto the dance floor. Olivia tried to escape the line dancing masses, but Willow quickly grabbed hold of her arm and held her firm for two more songs. She needed the extra support. Olivia got her into this, and Willow wasn’t about to allow the woman to bail on her now. A few others joined in and the DJ excelled at keeping everyone on their feet and dancing around, especially Benson. He moved as a man a third of his age would and Willow smiled at every step.
Then it all slowed down. Olivia and the others drifted off the dance floor as the music took a slower pace with the Righteous Brothers crooning through the speaker system. Panic filled Willow as she didn’t know if she should stay on the floor with Benson or turn and run. He spared her the decision. “How about another drink? All of this swaying around has parched my throat.”
She smiled as she offered a slight nod. “I’d like that.” She clasped her hands together in front of her as he escorted her from the floor and out the ballroom door to the bar.
Benson ordered another bourbon, neat, for himself and a vodka cranberry for her. It made her smile that he took the time to notice what she was drinking earlier. With drinks in hand, he led her over to a quiet table outside the ballroom away from the noise and merriment. “Correct me if I’m wrong, but you were a part of our group last night at the bar, were you not?” He smiled at her, as if daring her to deny he was right.
She blushed slightly, embarrassed to be remembered. “I was. I enjoyed listening to the stories everyone shared.”
“I wish you would have spoken up. It would have been fun swapping stories from home with someone.”
“I’m not one for talking much in crowds. I prefer to listen and watch.”
He nodded. “I can understand that.” He took a sip of his drink. “So, tell me what you enjoy about being on the Space Coast.”
And for the next two hours, the two of them sat there alone, lost in their own world, sharing their own stories. Willow hung on every word Benson uttered and he was equally talented in bringing out her tales of life in Cocoa Beach. Her drink watered down quickly, but neither felt like leaving their table for another one. They never even noticed when the ballroom lights were turned off and the door was locked and shut.

            Marie followed Leo's car to his condo a short distance away. The complex was quaint and quiet. When they arrived, Leo's mother was already waiting for them. She was a fine-boned woman with shiny graying hair and skin that matched Leo's.
            "There's my yeled. How did that risotto turn out?"
            Leo blushed slightly. "Fine, ima. I've got your bag, too."
            "Aren't you going to introduce your chaverah?"
            "Right." He cleared his throat. "This is Marie. Marie, this is my mom, Edden."
            "It's nice to meet you," Marie said.
            "Likewise. Sorry to interrupt your date. I promised my friends that I'd make Kugel and it never turns out quite right if I don't use this dish."
            "It's alright."
            Leo emerged with the bag he had brought in for lunch the day before. "Tell the Clynes I said hi." 
            "Of course!" Edden gave him a fond pat on the cheek. "Thank you for taking good care of my baking dishes, yakiri. Have fun on the rest of your date!"
            The woman sauntered away energetically, leaving Leo to explain all the Hebrew. He nervously cleared his throat again.
            "Anyway, you mentioned you wanted to see where I live. Do you want to come in?"
            "If you don't mind. I don't want to impose."
            "Not at all."
            Marie couldn't have said what she expected, but it wasn't quite what she got. The walls were a deep green, highlighting the brown leather couch and warm wooden coffee table. There was a large bookshelf on the wall next to a computer desk that faced a large window. The light carpet of the living room transitioned into a gray tile in the small kitchen and the entire space smelled of cedar and vanilla – much like Leo himself.
            "Welcome to my tiny bachelor pad," Leo said.  
            "It's lovely. Very comfortable."
            "Thanks. The IT office is pretty sterile, so I thought this would be a nice change. Can I get you anything? A drink maybe?"
            "Water would be nice, thank you."
            Leo procured two glasses of cool water while Marie looked over his collection of books. There were some tomes that looked like antiques and others that were clearly computer manuals, a good amount of fiction, and plenty of non-fiction that ranged in topics from history to philosophy to cookbooks.
            "Find anything that interests you?"
            Marie jumped slightly, not realizing how close he was. "I'm looking more into what interests you. You have quite the collection."
            "I do my best to be well-rounded." He handed her the glass and gracefully deposited himself on the couch, gesturing beside him. "Make yourself comfortable."
            Marie perched on the far end of the couch, unable to meet Leo's eyes. "Forgive me, I… feel a bit shy suddenly." 
            He put his own glass on the table and reached for hers to do the same. Every motion was slow and measured, giving her ample time to pull away. With her hand between his, he gently started to rub her palm. 
            "What are you doing?" she asked.
            "Trying to get you to relax. You seem more at ease when there's physical reassurance."
            Marie couldn't help but smile a little at that. "Seventeen: what do you think makes you so intuitive? This is twice now that you knew exactly what I needed."
            She could tell he was smiling even though she was focused on their hands. "Probably being the middle brother. My parents divorced when I was eight so I learned how to read people. I learned how to anticipate people's needs too since Bron was only three at the time. It wasn't the best time of my life, but I can say it made me into a better man than I might have been."
            "I think you're a very good man." Marie stilled his hands with her other one.
            "I do my best. Can I ask you a difficult question?"
            With a steadying squeeze of their hands she replied, "Okay."
            "Did someone hurt you? Sometimes, it's almost as if you're recovering from a trauma."
            "No," she answered, perhaps too fast. "Not a trauma. I'm just careful. My last few relationships haven't ended the best and… you seem too good to be true. Maybe I'm afraid."
            He pulled one hand from their shared grasp and brushed her hair behind her ear. She could feel his gaze, soft and intense at the same time.
            "I can't promise I won't hurt you, but I'll try very hard not to."
            "That's all I could ask for. Promises are fragile." There was a long moment of contemplative silence. "Who is your best friend? Tell me about them?"
            "I have two. Chris is a friend from high school and Bernadette I met when I worked at a coffee shop in college. We don't see each other as often as we'd like, but we're still pretty close. Eighteen: what's your love language?"
            "What's a love language?"
            "It's how you show affection. There are five: spending time, giving gifts, physical touch, doing services, and words of affirmation. I primarily spend time with people."
            Marie knew – of course she knew – but how to say it without giving herself away? "I like to do things for people. I try to be helpful when I can and I was raised to be obedient." She laughed. "It sounds very old fashioned when I say it that way."
            "A little but I understand what you mean."
             "If you could change something about yourself, what would it be?"
            "Just one thing? Probably my handwriting. When I was in elementary, my teachers always complained that they couldn't read my writing. What about you? What would you change about yourself?"
            She chuckled. "My confidence. I've never been very confident."
            Leo took a moment to count the questions. "Last one! We better make them good."
            Marie paused to think. "Tell me something about yourself that you don't usually tell people."
            "How personal do you want to get?"
            "As personal as you're willing to answer."
            Leo thought for a moment, as if choosing his words carefully. "I don't want to scare you with this, but I will be honest. I'm into the BDSM scene. I'm a Dom."
            Marie's world narrowed. She pulled her hands away. "You are?"
            "Please don't be afraid. It's not something I need but I do enjoy it. I've never even had a real sub, just rope bunnies. Sorry, that's girls who-"
            "Who let you tie them up. I know."
            That gave Leo pause. "How? Are you..?"
            "A sub, yes." Marie stood and stepped back. Leo visibly resisted the urge to stand as well.
            "…Then why do you look like you're ready to bolt?"
            "I've always had bad luck with Doms. Every single one. I don't want to be someone's plaything in the bedroom and a stranger in the real world. I can't do that anymore."
            "That's not what I would want either! That's not how it's supposed to be."
            "I… I need to think. No, no I don't." She took a deep breath to counteract her panicked, shallow ones. "If we're going to do this, we need to have a negotiation. A proper one. A contract even."
            That was when Leo finally stood. "Marie, we don't have to jump straight into contract talks. We can take it slow."
            "I don't want there to be any confusion. The rules are what keep me safe."
            "I know." He slowly brushed his hands over her arms. "In a scene, yes, the rules keep you safe. But we're not in a scene. We haven't gotten sexual. Have I done anything to make you think I would force you to do something you didn't want to?"
            "No, but…"
            "How about this; if things progress sexually, we try vanilla first. If that works out and we want to take it further, we can discuss our limits and negotiate then. Sound good?"
            Marie searched his face, looking for anything that might give him away as a liar. He let her study him. His eyes were genuine. 
            "Okay."
            If he noticed that she wasn't completely sure – which he almost certainly did – he made no indication of it.
            "What would make you feel most comfortable right now? Do you want to be distracted or would you rather go home?"
            Marie knew what she wanted, but swallowed against the urge. "I think I should go home. Minnow is probably wondering where I am."
            With little more than an 'alright', Leo walked her back to her car. He held her hand in his, cradling it like something fragile.
            "Drive safe. And let me know when you get home?" he requested.
            "Of course. Thank you for today. I'm sorry things got weird."
            "Don't worry about it." He pressed a kiss to her knuckles. "I'll talk to you later."

            Marie spent the rest of the day restlessly finding things to keep her hands busy. Her mind was spinning. She couldn't rectify the Leo she had come to know with a Dom in the bedroom. He was kind and funny and easy-going – not exactly the kind of person she could imagine tying her down or spanking her. 
            "You should meet him," she said to Minnow, who blinked curiously. "You've never been wrong about anyone. I should just have you screen anyone with potential…"

            At eight o'clock, Marie's phone started ringing.
            "How'd it go?" Piper asked, her voice slightly too loud.
            "It started out good," Marie replied, looking around at her spotless apartment.
            "What do you mean 'started'?  It didn't end well? Do I need to hire a hitman?"
            "No, no. He's perfect except…"
            "What?"
            Marie took a deep breath. "I don't like to out people but he's a Dom."
            "…You're joking."
            "I wish I were."
            At that, Piper flew into a frenzy of frustration on Marie's behalf.  How could this happen? How dare he be on a vanilla dating app? Why would he keep that from her?  Marie found herself defending him.
            "It's perfectly within his rights to keep that a secret. It's not the sort of thing you tell random strangers unless you know you're in a safe space. I'm surprised he told me so soon."
            Piper finally took a breath. "So what are you going to do now? I mean, it's not like this is your first rodeo."
            "I don't know. Like I said, he's perfect except for that. I'm scared but I don't think it's fair to cut him off just for that. He did trust me with that information. I suppose the best I could do is see it through. Do I sound crazy?"
            "Crazy in love, maybe. That might be a deal breaker for me, honestly, but you do you, girl."
            "I think I'm going to make myself some tea and watch bad movies in my pajamas so I don't have to think about this for a while."
            "Ooh take a bubble bath while you're at it! Have a self-care night!"
            "Thank you for talking to me. I really appreciate it. I'll see you Monday."
            Before getting into her pajamas (she decided to forgo the bubble bath), she checked her phone one last time.  There was a simple message from Leo.
