A daily skin care routine has four basic steps you can do once in the morning and once before you sleep.

1. Cleansing: Choose a cleanser that doesn't leave your skin tight after washing. Clean your face no more than twice a day, or just once, if you have dry skin and don't wear makeup. Avoid washing for that squeaky-clean feeling because that means your skin's natural oils are gone. Cleansers known to work well for all skin types include Cetaphil and Banila Clean It Zero Sherbet Cleanser.

2. Serums: A serum with vitamin C or growth factors or peptides would be better in the morning, under sunscreen. At night, retinol or prescription retinoids work best. Makeup Artist's Choice has an effective vitamin C and E serum and retinol available.

3. Moisturizer: Even oily skin needs moisturizer, but use one that is lightweight, gel-based, and non-comedogenic, or doesn't block your pores, like CeraVe's facial lotion. Dry skin may benefit from more cream-based moisturizers like MISSHA Super Aqua Cell Renew Snail Cream. Most brands will label their products as gel or cream on their packaging.

4. Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen with at least 30 SPF 15 minutes before heading outdoors, as it takes a while for sunscreen to activate. Darker skin tones actually need more sun protection because hyperpigmentation is harder to correct. Try EltaMD's sunscreen, which offers broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection and is recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation.

Choose products that fit your skin type and sensitivity, and remember to read the labels. Some products, such as retinol or prescription retinoids, should only be applied at night.

For all skin types
Stay hydrated.
Change pillow cases at least once a week.
Wash or wrap up hair before bed.
Wear sunscreen every day and apply 15 minutes before going out.

Start with a basic and simple routine to see how your skin reacts. Once you're comfortable, you can then add extra products such as exfoliants, masks, and spot treatments to boost your skin's health.

And don't forget to patch test new products, especially if you suspect you have sensitive skin. This can help you identify potential allergic reactions.

To patch test a new product:
Apply a small amount of product on your skin in a discreet area, such as the inside of your wrist or your inner arm.

Wait 48 hours to see if there's a reaction.
Check the area at 96 hours after application to see if you have a delayed reaction.

An allergic reaction may include irritation, redness, small bumps, or itchiness. If you notice these symptoms, wash the area you tested with water and a gentle cleanser. Then return the product and try another that better suits your skin type.

DIY hacks to avoid (even if everyone does it)

People report wonders from using DIY hacks like lemon juice and toothpaste for common skin problems like acne bumps and dark spots. Even award-winning actress Emma Stone claims her skin care secret is baking soda. But the truth is these hacks may cause more long-term harm than benefit because they can damage your skin's barrier.

Avoid these DIY hacks

Lemon juice: It may have citric acidic, but it's far too acidic and can cause dark spots to appear after sun exposure. It can also dry and irritate your skin.

Baking soda: At a pH level of 8, baking soda will stress your skin, significantly decreaseTrusted Source your skin's water content, and cause dry skin.

Garlic: In raw form, garlic can cause skin allergies, eczema, skin inflammation, and watery blisters.

Toothpaste: The ingredients in toothpaste may kill germs and absorb oil, but they can also dry out or irritate your skin.

Sugar: As an exfoliant, sugar is too harsh for the skin on your face.

Vitamin E: Topical application of vitamin E can irritate your skin and is not proven to improve scar appearance.

Some of these ingredients may be all natural and cost-effective, but they aren't formulated for your skin. Even if you don't feel immediate side effects, these ingredients can cause delayed or long-term damage. It's best to use products formulated for your face. Talk to your doctor or dermatologist before trying DIY applications on your skin.

How to treat skin problems? 

There are ways to tackle skin problems without damaging your skin. Just remember the number one rule of skin care: Don't pick! Picking at acne, blackheads, scabs, or other skin problems can cause open wounds or darker skin spots known as hyperpigmentation. Open wounds can lead to infections, more acne, or scars. The deeper the wound, the more likely your skin will scar.


When finding a toner for oily or acne prone skin don't look for the ones which provide a mattifying affect or the ones the are present as " oil-free " as they are the general cause to why your skin feels/looks so much oily after a period of time.

Toners for oily/acne prone skin:
1. Etude House wonder pore freshener, $11
It balances your skin's pH level.....and reduces the size of your pores which is a great benefit for oily skin...so it doesn't make your skin so oily and just a bottle lasts for so long ...I've had a very positive experience with this one.
2. MISSHA time revolution clear toner,$18
It evens out your skin tone and helps fade acne scars over a period of time...this is the second product which I've tested and had a good experience with
3. Belif pore cleanser moisturizer, $22
It does say its a moisturizer but its like a really thin film of toner....if you want to use it just as a moisturizer it doesn't really work but when combined with a thin layer of moisturizer/ oil it works wonders.
4. Benton Aloe BHA skin toner, $17
It contains aloe with natural anti oxidants and anti inflammatory properties and does contain salicylic acid on very small concentrations(0.5--2)% so it doesn't make your skin too dry....I think it's good for oily, not too dry skin....so it's good for hydration as well. It's been on my list for too long ....but I still haven't tried it ...so if you do please share your experience

Toners for sensitive/combination skin
1.  Etude House soonjung pH 5.5 relief toner, $11
It's a really good product for sensitive skin.....it doesn't contain any irritants or extra ingredients....so it's a great product for  espl. teenagers
2.  Muji sensitive skin lotion, $13
This is another great product with less price ....but it can be a little extra for oily skin types ...so you could probably use it in winter months....but it's perfect for dry skin people another thing...this brand is specifically designed for people with sensitive skin and they're doing a great job at it...so do give it a try.
3. Mizon intensive skin barrier toner , $15
 It actually contains ceramides so it's great for skin barrier and it is hydrating
4. Secret key aloe moist toner, $10
This toner is particularly very light so if you're using it in the day then it's perfect, but at night you need to layer it...so oily-sensitive skin its perfect for you.
5. Olivarrier pH 5.5 dual moist toning lotion, $28
This provides a lot of hydration and it also contains squalane(contains high amount of antioxidants) which is great for skin barrier ...it relieves skin from the stress
6. Earth's recipe energy boosting toner, $34
Another great product that provides intense hydration, contains loads of antioxidants.....it may feel a bit heavy for oily skin( use in winter)...but great for dry skin.

Toners for normal skin:
I think people with normal skin should consider using products which provide more hydration.....if they don't have any skin problems so the range from sensitive skin(unless specified) should be okay to use (according to the places they live in) as I think climate is a huge deciding factor when it comes to skincare.....like people who live in drier/cooler areas should use toners that have heavy consistency .....and people in hot places should use watery consistency toners(otherwise it may feel cakey)

Please note that the products I've mentioned in the toners section are specifically for hydration(they do not contain AHA's and BHA's) and do not provide the cleansing effect that exfoliating toners do and these hydrating toners can be layered to an extent but please "DO NOT LAYER ACID TONERS" i.e exfoliating toners as it can be damaging to your skin over a period of time.
For teenagers (13---23) I think using a Cleanser, Toner, Moisturizer and SUNSCREEN is more than enough....unless there are some diagnosed skin conditions.....using essences, serum, ampoules is not really necessary for this age group.
