Samir disappeared into the guest room and started rummaging through the closet. Both his and my parents moved back to India when we started college at the University of Chicago. For a year or so, we were still inseparable, but soon I kind of got dragged into Rahul’s friend group. I don’t know why I was so blinded by his popularity and lost sight of what was really important to me. 

Samir came out of the room with a towel and change of clothes in hand, “why do you look like you’re lost in a trance?” 

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I snapped out of it and took the clothes. “Anyway, why are you acting like nothing has changed?” 

“Would you rather me be mean to you and kick you out tonight?” He scoffed and came closer to me. “You’re my best friend and you always will be.” 

I scoot into his arms and the warmth of his body envelopes me. 

“As long as you’re not wet and cold like this,” He slightly pushed me away and laughed. 

I gave him a dirty look and went into the room to change. Throughout the house, there were pictures of Samir, his family, our friends and of course us. Books of astronomy, textbooks for college and classic reads lined the walls of the guest room. He always had a thing for a nice looking book, but what mattered to him was what was on the inside. 

Once I changed, I left the room and was met with the savory scent of popcorn. Samir looked like he was in his natural element: taking care of people. Perhaps that’s why Samir on the path to becoming a doctor felt so natural. 

“So why are you making popcorn?” I glanced at the sofa filled with pillows and blankets. “Is it movie night for you?” 

“Yup!” His face lit up as he mixed in special spices into the buttery popcorn. “I thought we could binge some movies or maybe even a show because we don’t have any school for a week.” 

“Oh yeah, it’s Spring break.” 

Samir brought over the popcorn and sat on the couch. He looked up expecting me to follow suit. I don’t know why I felt so stuck and it was such a natural transition into normalcy for him. 

“Are you not mad at me?” I said in a small voice. 

“Hey, come on Jazzy” He got up and hugged me tight. “Like I said you are my best friend. Of course I was mad when you left me hanging, but I got over it. I just kept telling myself ‘Jazzy is happy.’ But I should’ve still checked on you.” 

“Don’t blame this on yourself Sam.” I sniffled. “I’m the bad guy. You want to know what happened?” 

“Of course if you’re ready.” 

“I saw Rahul with Priya at my apartment.” 

“You’re cousin? What is she even doing in Chicago?” 

“She came last week to see me, but I never thought she had eyes for Rahul.” My blood started boiling thinking about the image burned into my mind. “I can’t believe it, after all I’ve done for him and even Priya.”

He chuckled and turned his attention to pulling up a movie. Of course it was a sci-fi space thriller. I dug a handful of popcorn and started stuffing my mouth.
