I never really expected much from life but I guess no one really expected much from me, either.
As a kid, I always was the weird kid for not trying to start relationships with other people. I mostly just skated through life. For good reason, though.
As far back as I could remember my luck has been...abysmal at best.
Any time I tried to make friends with someone, something bad would happen. Nothing too crazy if you don't count that one time in first grade I accidentally tripped and knocked my entire lunch on a girl I was acquainted with. Oh, or that other time I was laughing at a popular kid's jokes and spit my milk all over him. And that time in second-grade physical education when I threw a ball in dodgeball and it ricocheted off of at least five kids' heads. Yeah, some of them received light concussions from that...
If you still think that it was just coincidences or all in my head, then what about that time in freshman year when I was joking about Todd Forester just to find out he was in the hospital and needed serious surgery that day. Or when one of the popular girls invited me to Prom and stood me up. Okay, maybe that one was just a coincidence but it still hurt me for years!
Don't even get me started about my early college years! My life was starting to look up as I managed to skip a grade and start college earlier. A new face in a sea of strangers. I was finally going to turn my luck around and I did at first. Nothing too bad happened, and I even got my first girlfriend. So far so good!
I majored in Computer Science and minored in Web Design. I even helped start some successful projects with some new friends. We were gaining a lot of traction on Kickstarter. Our effort was just starting to bear fruit. Eventually, we made and released the mobile game we made called Arcadian Records. It became a hit especially with those who were fans of Gacha games.

I only helped with getting the Kickstarter and website together so I didn't gain too much money or fame. They even forgot to list my name in the credits, but I digress.
I was still happy that my life was turning around.
Well until one day my girlfriend came to me asking to break up. She had told me that she suspected me of cheating and had proof. When I had asked her to show me the proof, she couldn't but still insisted that we should break up.
I was heartbroken.
The love of my life had walked out of my life and she took a part of me with her.
I soon found myself becoming more and more saddened by her departure. I threw myself into my work to try and forget about her. The days passed and they soon turned into months. Eventually, I became well-known in the gaming community for my impressive bug fixes. I started to find solace in that fact.
I often spent much of my free time after work browsing Reddit and tech sites. I didn't want to lose my skills and wanted to continue to stay on top of software bugs, common or otherwise.
Before I knew it, I gained a sort of following online as the Bug Fix King. They often praised my work as both quick and efficient. I was happy again. This is what I would be known as.
I often flaunted my know-how and bug fix techniques to my co-workers to their dismay. Eventually, I was called to Human Resources many times for being 'obnoxious 'and 'rude.' I tried to tone it down after that but the power was getting to me.
For the first time in my life, I was in power. I was liked and not bullied. I felt in control and Reddit was fueling my ego and self-worth. I couldn't just stop. They must be in sheer awe of the Bug Fix King. Of course, that must be it.
So, whenever a co-worker asked me for help in identifying what kind of bug they had and what kind of fix was needed for it, I just told them. Of course, I would only tell them if they referred to me by my Reddit Handle: Bug Fix King.
I was once again called to Human Resources.
"You're fired."
"Wait, what? Why may I ask?"
The secretary at the desk stared deeply into my eyes causing me to sweat intensely.
"Let's see where to start, shall we?" She was in a black office swivel chair, the same as the last time I saw her. She moved along the floor with ease as she rolled aside as she leaned over to open a filing cabinet.
She was wearing a black blouse over a white buttoned-up shirt. The first two buttons weren't buttoned so her skin was exposed revealing a bit of cleavage. I couldn't help but try to get a little peek. ' I can't believe it has been six months since Jess broke up with me...I haven't even been on a date in over half a year! I wonder would she go on a date with me. No, wait, what am I talking about! She's about to fire me after all...'
She pulled out a large manilla folder causing me to immediately jump back.
"I wasn't looking or anything! I promise!"
The secretary cocked her head to the side with a confused look on her face.
"What are you talking about, Mr. Armeyer?"
"Nothing. Nothing at all..." I quickly shift myself in my seat. "So, how are you?"
The secretary continued to give me a look. Her eyebrows slightly raise as she looks at me like I'm a madman. 
'Maybe I am turning into a lunatic..."
"I am fine, Mr. Armeyer. Now here is a list of all of the reports from your co-workers about your recent behavior."
"My recent behavior? But, I don't think I have been treating my co-workers badly or anything." She hands me the envelope as I open it up. 'There's a lot of papers in here...Wait, and they're all about me?!'
I continued to flip through the files as I scanned them all over. 'Why are there so many? What the heck! I have only been a loyal worker through and through? And some of these go back a couple of months. This one is the worst of them all!'
I pull one of the files and put it in front of the others. At the top is a name I was more than familiar with. It was the name of a co-worker I've been friendly with recently. Marcus Porter, a new co-worker I recently started to mentor here.
'Even Michael, huh?' I felt betrayed and quite possibly, bamboozled. Every day, I shared all of my best bug fixes with him and even gave him a personal recommendation to our District Manager. I know I'm awkward sometimes and I have bad interpersonal skills, but I'm willing to work on this!
"Please, give me another chance! I don't want to be a jobless person who spends all their time reading manga or light novels in their room all day! Onegai! Er, I mean please!"
The secretary could only shake her head at me, even as I was on the verge of tears.
"If this was your first or second offense, then I would be all for giving you another chance but you've been here more than twice. Honestly, you were going to be fired sooner but due to your amazing track record we continued to employ you."
I couldn't understand what I was hearing...I was going to be fired and lose my dream job. But wait they can't fire me yet! It's just as she said, my amazing track record is too great! If I were to bring that up...'
Just as I was about to open my mouth, she stopped me.

"If you are going to tell me something like 'how are you going to replace someone like me', then you can forget it. We already have just the person to replace you. You should already know him since you taught him everything you knew."
'No...it can't be...'
"We have chosen Marcus Porter to be your replacement. He has already accepted your old position and is all ready to start tomorrow morning."
Her words broke me. 'Marcus...you bastard! How could you? I placed you under my care and you backstab me like this!"
"You can pack up all of your things and head home. Your final check will be in the mail. Have a wonderful day, Mr. Bug Fix King."
"Alright...Wait, w-what did you just say?"
"I said have a wonderful day, Mr. Armeyer"
"Will do..." I quickly went back to my desk to gather my things. 'I probably just misheard her or something. It's not like anybody here knows my online persona or anything. Even if they did, It's not like it would change anything.'
I gathered all my stuff in an old storage box we had lying around in the office and drove home.
"Haah~ I can't believe they fired me...At least I have some savings gathered up but how long would that last."
I couldn't help but start to feel lost again. The first time in a while where I had little to nothing else to put my time into. Well, besides Reddit and video games.
'Speaking of, I wonder how those guys are doing...I haven't really talked to them since college. That, and the game becoming super successful.
I decided to sit down at my computer in my room. I flipped the light switch and was greeted with my messy room. There were shirts and other articles of clothing littered around that I had forgotten to put away. 'Well, it's not like I forgot per see. I've just been so into work...No, I don't even want to talk about work so let's not bring that up right now.'
I decided to make my way to the computer and the first thing I saw was my wallpaper. The one with both me and Jessica in it.
"We looked so happy then..."
It took everything I had to quickly open up a tab to hide the wallpaper in front of me. Though this wasn't a permanent fix, it was all I could think to do at the moment. I would change the wallpaper but I would also be running away from my past. I would be lying if I said that I no longer had any feelings for her anymore. Some part of me still wishes we could get back together.
I decided to quickly clear my mind as I thought about what to look up.
'Well after a long, hard day at work, why not unwind with something nice, huh? Come on, it's been so long since you've last done 'it', right? So, what are you waiting for?'
I couldn't help it. I couldn't hold myself back any longer. These urges were beyond any modern mortal's control! They were now a way of life.
My fingers danced across my keyboard as I typed in the same keywords as I have always done. It was almost like clockwork.
I hit the enter key.
I was now ready to do 'it'.
I was now ready to play video games again.
I was greeted with the same words just as I had remembered they sounded like.
"Welcome to Arcadian Records, brave player!"

Jacob Armeyer was a 23-year-old freelance game designer. One day he had gotten a job to work on another bug in the sequel to the hit mobile game, Arcadian Records. Guys, I need your opinions about what to do regarding my love life.
I never had a boyfriend before so I needed your help.
 I had a best friend who confessed to me that he was interested to be my boyfriend. 
Let's call the guy (I'm just going to pick a random word) Key.
Key was very sweet, caring, and protective and we had known each other for two years.
Even if we already knew each other that long, sometimes I feel like I didn't know him.
He was mysterious and secretive.
 A little bit overbearing at times and I don't want to assume but I think he gets jealous easily.
He just broke up from his ex-girlfriend just days ago in front of everyone at school and he told me that he broke up with her to be with me. I like Key but I didn't want to be a rebound. 
I can't be a rebound for my first relationship, you see.
Now, this other friend of his, let's call this guy Brush, was also a hottie like Key but I'm not sure if he was serious or he was playing around either. His motives are kind of sketchy but he had given me flowers and gifts for no reason aside from an apology. He's kind of a prankster and I see him as too flirtatious but weirdly enough, I hadn't seen him doing that to other girls. Either way, I don't want to assume that I was special.
Now, this third guy, his name is R—I mean, let's call him Aries. I didn't know him because we aren't even that close. I think I probably interacted with him five times but, there were no moments where we were left alone together. I don't even know what his powers—I mean—what his charms consist of, hehe.
I got a random text from him today and he told me that he would join Brush and Key in wooing me.
They called it the Dating Games.
In my mind, I think that I have been played here—like it was some sort of a bet.
I don't know. I don���t know what to do about them.
How would you handle this situation if this happened?

"What sizes, Cass?" There was a sudden deep voice from behind me and I jumped.
I was too startled that it became an immediate reaction.
I had squealed in the middle of the class.
No, I realized as I looked around the room.
Pairs of eyes stared right back at me as my classmates rummaged on their backpack, shoving their books and notebooks inside. 
The class had ended and I didn't even notice.
Did the bell ring?
That was impossible to miss, unless, I was deaf.
I was lost in my daydreams that I didn't know that it was lunchtime.
 I didn't even remember if I had written any notes from the other lectures.

 If he saw that, it's going to be embarrassing.
Thankfully, the screen was locked.
Lysander had moved behind me, looking over my shoulder.
I turned to look at his expression and the handsome bastard was giving me his signature Cheshire Cat grin.
"I was curious about the word 'sizes' I have seen on the screen earlier," Lysander said out loud—too loud--startling me out of my thoughts.
 My classmates were now looking over at us, trying to find out what the commotion was all about.
Clearing my throat, I replied in a low voice but still managing to sound indignant. "There are no sizes."
 I think other students in the vicinity still heard that, shooting me curious glances and raised eyebrows from both female and male students.
Argh. 
Now they would think I was a pervert.

His gaze jerked up and clashed with mine, confusion darkening those gorgeous irises. "I'm doing things I never even wanted to do in the first place. Like messing up my mission as the heir of the House of Cups."

"I don't want to be indebted to you! I don't want you to get hurt while you kept me safe."

The more I spoke, the more Gabriel's pupils narrowed.

"Do you know why I'm doing this?" Gabriel chuckled without humor as he cupped my chin, forcing my face to his. "Because I loathe it when you are hanging out with some other guy. Someone who isn't me." 

He pulled back and studied my face before shaking his head. "I want to kill them myself. There's a dark thought in my mind that says you are mine to own. And you are mine to kill when that time comes where I have to."

Gabriel's grip tightened and he leaned down, placing us nose to nose, his choppy breath traipsing over my lips. "You like taunting me by flirting with other guys too, do you? Well, guess what? It works. I can't fucking get you out of my mind." 

He released me long enough to slam a fist into the wall just beside my temple. "The first kiss was a goddamn mistake. It was supposed to purge you from my thought, make me stop wondering what you taste like."

The way to make boring tasks more appealing is actually very simple. All you have to do is remove other factors that might be more fun or interesting. These factors can then be used as rewards for when you achieve your personal goals. 

To make this transition easier, it is recommended to do somewhat of a mental detox, where you choose certain activities that you will completely avoid for a period of time. This can be reading light novels, reading manga, playing video games, watching anime/shows/movies, wasting time browsing social media platforms or reddit, etc. 

Setting goals with rewards is also a very key aspect of this. For example: every 2 hours I ..., I get to read 2 chapters of my favorite novel. 

To maximize your attention, you should also regularly take short breaks during sessions. A good starting point is once every half an hour, but this is heavily dependent on preference. You'll be able to tell when your concentration starts waning and that's the point where you should take a ~5 minute break to clear your head.

"Master, to truly fuse one of us emotion spirits to a named object, you first need to find a white pure soul gem or black corrupt soul gem. While soul gem themselves are very common. Soul gems are created when a living being with a consciousness dies. The soul of the being goes into the afterlife and depending on how strong they are, they will leave different amounts of soul gems. However, white pure or black corrupt soul gems are soul gems dropped by beings who have done nothing but good or bad. Not only are they very rare, to combine it you need to face our aftereffects, and the only way to rid of our spirit's aftereffects is by dying. However, the longer you stay with that spirit's emotion, the stronger the weapon."


"So basically, I have to kill a baby. That's basically what you are saying." Damien looked at Benevolentia with fear. That's Kindness?


"That would be one way to do it. However, you will need to extremely lucky. As they are very weak, they will almost never drop a gem.


Moving on, you should probably prioritize getting Avaritia, Luxuria, or Gula as your first object of emotion. As much as the rest of us want a house, those three are unique. All three need to take more than 1 soul gem. For every 5 sexual items you gain, you need to give Luxuria one soul gem to get stronger. For Gula, it is every 5 food item you gain, and for Avaritia, every item you give him, the need for soul gems increases exponentially." Benevolentia pointed at the three spirits she was talking about.


"Umm, ok, well that will have to wait won't it? I mean you haven't told me the easiest way to earn these crystals."


"Oh, about that, there is no easiest way. There is the one you were talking about, killing babies. This one depends on your luck.
There is also killing children or adults. For this one, you are guaranteed a soul gem, but it will almost never be completely pure or corrupt. This also depends on your luck.
Finally, there is completely annihilating souls. First, you need to be dead. Easy right? Well, then you need to completely remove a soul from the death reality. Doing this will cause the soul to reincarnate, with their memories intact. However, you will be marked by the reality, and be chased by every reaper it has. So choose wisely!" Benevolentia gave Damien a smile and waved.


"Why did you wav..! WAIT, WHY AM I BECOMING TRANSPARENT?!" Damien looked at his body, only to see it become more and more transparent.


"Master, you are waking up now, please think which of those three you will be giving the Scythe of Spirits to. I wish you a good day, Master, bye!"

"Master, are you okay?" Laura looked at Damien, whose body was covered in sweat.


"Yeah, I'm fine, I was just talking to the spirits."

"They want houses, as in named objects...God, I need to find 11 more named weapons. That's gonna take 50 chapters." (No, I will not give him all 11 weapons in 50 chapters, he has already gotten a good enough start.)


"Master, come on, there's something on the news." Laura started pulling Damien out of bed.

Laura then dragged Damien to his desk and pressed a button. The button brought up a floating TV, and on it was the breaking news.

People are trapped in their VR sets!
Groups are reporting that some people are unable to be contacted after entering the game [Worlds Collide]. The only patterns we have figure out are that the people trapped have all been, at one point, in the top 5 of a popular MMORPG. There are some exceptions, but right now we need to figure out how to get them all out.
Just in case, you must refill the trapped people with a dose of nutrients every 2 days.

"Jade wasn't that good at games..." Damien started sulking. He started feeling somewhat jealous, for whatever reason. He shook his head, clearing his thoughts. "Laura, come on, I got to go outside really quick." Damien quickly changed into new clothes and ran downstairs. Laura, shaking her head, picked up the empty food plates and carefully walked down the stairs, before putting them on the counter, where a robot appeared and took the plates to go clean.

Laura them followed Damien outside. They got on to Damien's motorbike and Damien started driving. They first when to the store to buy nutrient bottles, then traveled back home to inject Jade with nutrients. They left the house after they finished and half an hour later, they arrived at a run-down building. 

"Master, are you here to train?"

"Yeah, I've never used a scythe before, so I want to try to see how it feels."

Damien focused on the ring and the Scythe of Spirits appeared in his hand. He started twirling it in the air, with the blade of the scythe spinning around him like a twister. He grabbed the scythe with both hands and started slicing at the air. He jumped into the air and flipped while dragging the scythe behind him. As he did a 360, he brought the scythe over his head and into the ground. 

"I am a farmer." Damien suddenly spoke out a cheesy one-liner. 

"What?" Laura cocked her head in confusion.

"I saw this in my last life, on Reddit." Damien started chuckling. (I was looking for techniques for scythes, and found it on Reddit.)

"It...sucks." 

Damien picked up the scythe out of the ground and tried to think of the things he read on Reddit. He started using the scythe in a leg sweeping motion, which was followed by a jab with the top of the scythe.
Damien continued practicing with the scythe for 4 hours before stopping. The sun has already started setting and Damien was covered in sweat. Laura, on the other hand, had fallen asleep.

"Come on, Laura, let's go home." Damien started shaking Laura awake.

"Mmm, Master, two more minutes." Laura turned around and fell back asleep.

"Sigh, fine. 2 more minutes." Damien sat down and started wiping off his sweat.

All of a sudden the building started rumbling, the walls started collapsing, and the ground started cracking. A xanadu colored crack appeared in the air and started growing. Damien felt his soul being pulled in as he lost consciousness.

Chapter 3 - Evening


Another day wasted


Now that his work is finished for the day, Adonis can finally unwind and relax. His brain feels fried but he doesn't feel the slightest bit of accomplishment, which pisses him off.


It doesn't even work, liars.


Adonis visits a subreddit he has recently been interested in: r/theredpill. Obviously, he wants to get girls, he's a young man, but he also likes the atmosphere of the community here. It annoys him however, the advice given here just doesn't work. He reads over the same post he read last night. It's a post about building discipline and accomplishing things that make you feel proud, which apparently is the right way to attract women.


I doubt it.


He feels cheated, lied to.


I've been working all day, where are the girls?
They just fuck the guys that don't even care about self-improvement as long as they look good.
It just doesn't work.


Adonis keeps reading. He clicks on another post that states an effective way to find girls to date is to approach them and speak to them on the street.


Yeah right, that's not going to work.


He's never tried it, but he's sure of himself. Post by post he denies the effectiveness of the advice given. But he can't stop reading. So he clicks on the next post. And the next. And the next.


It's been over one and a half hours. He feels even more overworked, still with nothing to show for it. That annoys him even further. He feels productive writing out his own comments on the posts, so he spends the next hour doing so...


"Cold approaching does not work idiot. You have to look like a fucking model to get girls to talk to you on the street"

After submitting his contributions, Adonis feels fatigued. It's been a long, hard day. He proceeds straight to YouTube where he denies the advice given on the videos. This time he lets the videos play out a little longer rather than flick through them quickly.


He watches the same YouTuber who gave him the idea of setting up a habit tracker on his computer, a simple list of habits like meditation, journaling, exercising, reading. The YouTuber and all the comments below the video say how effective this self-improvement strategy has been in their development. Adonis opens his habit tracker. He did have a couple of boxes checked when he first made the tracker, it all went downhill from there.


I just don't get why they're all lying about this stuff. 
It doesn't work for me.


He looks over today's unchecked boxes. Not a single one checked. Adonis has a fleeting thought to immediately meditate for a few minutes or do some pushups.


No, that wouldn't even do anything, and I'm tired. 
I'll do a full workout tomorrow instead.


Before closing down his habit tracker, Adonis checks all of today's boxes. It gives him a small feeling of accomplishment as he closes the page.


Adonis spends the next few hours as he always does - Stuck to his computer chair flicking between YouTube, video games, Reddit, and Instagram. He masturbates again, this time to the League of Legends loading screen which shows a large-breasted female character.


His dinner tonight is a cheese and tomato pizza. His mother did make a home-cooked meal, she even spent hours preparing it today, but he chooses the pizza and tells her to bake it for him. Adonis hears his mother call from the kitchen that his food was ready, but he knows the drill. If he pretends he can't hear her, she'll put the pizza on a plate and bring it straight up to his room. And so he puts on his headphones and continues watching YouTube videos until his servant arrives, which she does promptly. She knows the drill too. He takes the plate from her and immediately looks back on his computer. Adonis's mother awkwardly stays in the room for a few seconds, perhaps crazy enough to expect a 'thank you from her son. She adjusts some of his things to make them look more organized and leaves his room, shutting the door. She goes straight downstairs to watch the television by herself.


Adonis doesn't taste the pizza. He doesn't taste or feel much these days. His mind is a haze, his body is fragile, his mood fluctuates. He's so bored of YouTube but can't avoid it. So he searches for a guide on 'How to stop watching YouTube', on YouTube.


I should get that, that's a great idea.


Adonis is instantly filled with enthusiasm and excitement for he has found the solution to his problems. The video he is currently watching suggests getting a 'website blocker' that will ban him from visiting YouTube.com.


He immediately downloads the software and turns it on and to his amazement, it works! He tests it a few times to ensure its effectiveness and is pleasantly surprised at how well the website blocker works.


This is it!


He's so excited to finally have more free time in the day. Adonis's thoughts drift to him in his perfect 5 am morning routine, waking up early and meditating and working out and checking his business to see thousands in sales. He spends a good few minutes daydreaming whilst robotically clicking on different YouTube videos. He stops.


What the fuck?


Adonis didn't even realize that he had turned off the website blocker and started his usual pattern of flicking through multiple YouTube videos. In his unaware daydreaming state, he had the website blocker disabled to test its features and without even realizing it, clicked on a morning routine video. And then the next. And the next. And the next.


Frustration kicks in but he doesn't let it damper his mood. He enables the website blocker again, his saving grace, and gives himself a pep talk in his mind…


Ok leave this one just like this and then when you next click on YouTube, it will come up with the error message, so just don't turn off this blocker and it will all be fine.
Don't turn it off.


It's a good attempt, but there's an issue. It's 9:34 pm and there are still a few hours left of Adonis's day. He sits around craving YouTube like an addict, trying to think of something else to do that would fulfill his need to unwind and relax. He doesn't feel like playing any video games and he's too tired to do any work, besides, he's been working all day.


Yeah, just turn it off for tonight, and then from tomorrow, I'll keep the blocker enabled.


Within seconds Adonis has the website blocker disabled and he's back on YouTube, feeling content. He's watched enough self-improvement videos for one day, however, so he idly sits around thinking of something else to watch. He searches for 'Gold digger prank' videos and immediately scrolls down to the comments and particularly likes the ones that state that women only like men for their money. It makes him feel better.


Oh come on that's obviously faked, stupid bitch


He's annoyed at the authenticity of the video but at the same time, he can't stop staring at the woman described as a gold digger. So he starts clicking on more videos like this one, particularly if they have an attractive woman in the thumbnail. He flicks through the videos straight to the point where you can see the woman as best as possible and strokes his penis through his pants as he watches. He doesn't even have the energy or motivation to masturbate again so he just watches the videos for seemingly hours until he feels sweaty.


He struggles to stop clicking on the next videos and finds it difficult to close down YouTube for the day. He glances at the time: 00:47 am

Webnovels

Webnovels are a subset of contemporary Chinese literature published exclusively through Internet platforms. Think ArchiveOfOurOwn but not free, and for original content. My extremely subjective view of them is that they are generally speaking, terrible pulp fiction mostly written for emotional satisfaction rather than because the author is chasing the Nobel Prize for literature. However, I don't mean to demean them because they're the exact type of stuff from which really good shit will emerge, so I've been eyeing them from a safe distance for a while. They're basically the combination of what YA novels and shitty romance novels and Dan Brown books and stuff are to English readers - utter shite, but also an important part of the ecosystem.

While online publishing exists in the west, it's not nearly a big of a deal as it is in China. A very large portion of the top IPs mainland Chinese people consume originated from webnovels - Mo Dao Zu Shi is one that I know has some recognition on Reddit. Off topic but is it a coincidence that webnovels, the the most loosely-regulated medium available to most people, is also the most popular? Worth thinking about isn't it. Unfortunately the webnovel community had also suffered some intense state-run censorship over the past two years which has greatly reduced creative freedom (ie. many no longer dare to describe any physical contact between characters in fear of being reported as pornography, no kidding).

Webnovel authors rely on a few large platforms for publication and readership. Without getting too specific: readers purchase works they like through the platform, and the platform gives a portion of the income generated by a novel to the creator. This system works - many authors depend on it for a living, others use it as a side hustle or write for fun.

Fucking Tencent enters the game

A few days ago, Tencent, which owns one of the two major webnovel platforms (and holds 50% of shares in the other one), updated their contract for authors. Some of the changes are as follows:

All copyright of any given work now belongs to Tencent, until 50 years after the author's death. Tencent can do whatever the fuck they want with it without having to negotiate anything with the author.

Legal fees caused by copyright disputes will still be entirely paid by the author, not Tencent.

Tencent can release any work on the platform for free.

Tencent has the right to any social media accounts of the author.

Tencent is not obligated to provide authors with any employee benefits.

Upon signing the contract the author is obligated to provide an exact schedule for how and when a work will be completed. Failure to following the schedule will be seen as breaking the contract, to which Tencent can respond by not distributing benefits to the author, or requiring the author to take responsibility for losses incurred.

Why this means fucking Tencent is about to ruin everything

As you can see, this is basically a slave contract. It will completely re-shape the existing Internet literature landscape - authors lose all rights to everything and Tencent gets a free IP farm. Tencent can adapt your work in any way they like. If Tencent doesn't like you, they can kick you off and give your penname and social media handles to someone else. Tencent can change your work any way you want, without your permission. Tencent doesn't even need to pay you, in fact you might wind up paying Tencent. While the most famous authors will be temporarily unscathed, everyone else will probably lose any income they receive from writing.

This all happened a few days ago, and the community is in chaos. The most commonly reposted comment is that authors have been collectively reduced to a bunch of ghostwriters. Some of the most successful authors have made long posts on social media denouncing the whole thing, while many others stayed conspicuously quiet. A very popular book "Gui Mi Zhi Zhu" (Lord of the Unknown? something like that) that updated periodically for years suddenly concluded yesterday with an ending many readers found disappointing, likely in low-key protest against the change.
Even worse, numerous less-famous authors who are well-aware that they aren't popular enough for Tencent to feel the need to financially compensate them properly have announced they will just stop writing entirely.

In the long term since Tencent, a profit-incentivised megacorp has complete creative control over so many works, a sharp decline in the quality of popular media available in simplified Chinese is inevitable - everything from adding lowbrow fanservice to completely altering the themes of a book will likely happen, based on Tencent's track record. It's a truly horrifying prospect for Chinese-only readers who had little high-tier pulp to consume in the first place. Someone posted: "Censorship by the socialist regime killed Internet literature, and now capitalists are here to eat its corpse," very edgy but pretty accurate in my opinion.

While saying that this will "destroy" Internet literature in mainland China might be an overstatement right now, it's another clear step towards the medium's demise because the other webnovel platforms are likely to follow Tencent's footsteps if this implementation turns out to be profitable. I've never felt more sympathy for my friends who aren't bilingual, they'll be stuck with shittier and shittier IPs until the whole thing collapses.

Why isn't anything being done about all this?

Because there's little anyone can do. Tencent famously possesses "the most power legal department in China", a lawsuit will go nowhere if not bite you in the ass. Organised protests and labour unions of any form are illegal in China. Ironically enough, most of this happened on Labour Day.
Not using the platform this happened to is an option that many are taking, but no one knows if it will be effective since only users who actually care will participate.

Conspiracy theory time

Archive Of Our Own, the free fanfiction platform, was banned in China around a month ago due to idol fandom squabbles (there are good posts covering it on this sub). Could Tencent have been behind that, since AO3 is non-profit and actually endorses creative freedom?

Duh is living through her daily life, it's simple and not very exciting. And then, out of nowhere her dead grandmother visits her.. well, it gets complicated later..

Chapter 62

The train ride was, if anything, a little more animated than James was used to. People spoke in hushed, excited tones throughout, either in person, or through AR calls. Those always made James chuckle a little, as a person would simply be sitting, seeming to stare off usually blankly in a single direction, while they listened to a voice being transmitted from elsewhere into their mind via an ear bud.

James never received AR calls, a fact he was actually glad of. He couldn't imagine standing around where everyone could hear your conversation with another person. He preferred sending messages via his AR text features when he could, in the rare circumstances he had to communicate with someone. The train ride was one of those circumstances.

Rue,

Just wanted to make sure you were alright following everything that happened. Wanted to let you know, Steve's achievement worked, we did it, I am now a Tier 2, Rank 5 Dungeon Core, though I'm sure you already knew that. Any who, I gave the Terminus the Like a Sir passive, like we discussed earlier. I know you wanted Godzilla?!, but trust me, Like a Sir will be so much better. He scanned over the message really quickly before he sent it. Should he keep signing his messages Glyax to Rue? She obviously knew his name was James. He wasn't quite sure what to make of that whole situation, especially the link between her, her father, and James's parents. That was all way above his head, and he promptly decided, not truly worth devoting too much thought to. There wasn't much he could do about the situation, and he was sure part of the reason Xander had shared all that information with James, was to try and get inside of his head. You didn't become the top gamer of a generation without playing mind games. However, James was a top gamer in his own right, and he could tell what Xander was trying, and it wasn't going to work.

At least, as James sent the message to Rue, closing out of his messenger just as the train reached his stop, that's what he told himself. He knew deep down he was going to spend more than a little time during the day in class replaying the conversation over and over in his head. Part of that, would most definitely be trying to puzzle out what exactly was going on. The other part though, would be spent trying to figure out ways to poke Xander, now that he knew he had some levels of protection from the wanna be all-powerful developer.

"Oy Specs." James was pulled from his pondering by a loud voice, the sound of it making him wince.

"We've been waiting for you." A second voice, and James slowly turned his face in the direction of the voices. Dwight, and his party of orcs, er, friends, were making their way towards James from the direction of the school. Uh oh.

"Hey guys, how'd it go last night?" He offered them a fake smile and a wave, his eyes darting around. He knew exactly how it had gone for them. And unfortunately, he could already guess who the bullies were about to blame for their misfortune. Of course, they were completely right in their assumptions.

Dwight walked up and put his arm around James's shoulder and neck, pulling him in roughly as the bully eyed their surroundings.

"Oh, just great. We went to that chest you told us about."

James swallowed hard as he felt Dwight's grip tighten. "Any luck?" He managed to get out.

"It was a mimic." The grip was painful now.

James was scared, but he inadvertently let out a slight chuckle before he could stop himself. That video was still racking up views. It was probably one of the funniest things James had seen in a while, Dwight's orcish face twisted in fear right before he got eaten. Priceless. The chuckle died as Dwight's arm flexed, cutting off the blood circulation to James's brain for a split second before loosening. That moment of pain, followed by the rush of blood, made something in James tick.

He was always so in control, but right now, after all he had been through, James could feel himself growing angry. First, Xander, now, Dwight. Apparently, the two of them together just put a little more pressure on James's cool than he realized.

"I'm, I'm sorry to hear that. I've been seeing a lot of chatting about mimics on reddit, I think they were just added last night." He wasn't lying, there was an entire thread, titled It's a Traaaaappppp, that was trying to pinpoint where the mimics were located. However, the conclusion the internet had come to, the correct conclusion, was that they were random. People were simply going to have to gamble with RNG when it came to whether or not a chest was safe.

"Funny, that you managed to get to the chest and get a gold coin, while we get eaten by a mimic."

James pushed against the grip from the bully, working to free himself. "Do you think I had something to do with it?" James did his best to act insulted and confused at the same time. He wasn't sure how his face was twisting, but judging by Dwight's surprised look on his face, James had to guess he was accomplishing something. Well, it was either his face, or the strange tone his voice was taking.

"Well,"

James cut Dwight off before the bully could continue, having finally freed himself.

"Seriously, how the hell would I be able to know if it is a mimic or not? Just because you're unlucky doesn't mean you take it out on me. I told you what I knew. It's not my fault you and your Orc buddies there got gobbled up by a freaking mimic. You do know, sucking at a video game, bad luck, those aren't caused by other players, that shits your problem."

This really wasn't like James, but after being bullied by Dwight and his friends for so long, not to mention everything that had just happened to him, well, he may have finally hit his limit. That, and the injustice of it all. Why were bullies allowed to get away with their actions? Especially given the fact that everything was freaking recorded. Did no one care about-

James's train of thought was cut short as a fist smashed into the side of his jaw. The sudden jarring caused his brain to bounce wildly about his head, as his world wavered and flickered. His balance was lost, and he hit the ground. Hard. He heard muffled cries and shouts, but the world was cast in strange dark figures, and James closed his eyes against them, fighting the nausea that was welling up within his body. As he did so, the world seemed to fade to darkness, as he slipped out of consciousness.

James hates his real life. He spends his days being bullied in school, and at home he simply reads and plays games. The only thing he has to look forward to is immersion. When he is immersed in the virtual world he can be whatever, whoever, he wants: He can escape the world that has thrown him away.

As such, when a new game, Dungeon Core Online, comes out, James is excited to play. He immerses himself as soon as he can, but when he is set to create his character he is instead offered a different choice. Now, James is the Dungeon Core and he suddenly finds himself wielding more power, with more options, than he's ever had before. The only downside... there are people in the real world who do anything, even kill, to gain the power of a Dungeon Core in the virtual world.
