I’m Tired Of It. But What Else Is There To Read? The Inevitable Cycle Continues... For Now...

The following day was the start of Ashley's spring vacation. Immediately, he had decided to skip breakfast and rush quickly to the attic under the pretense of spring cleaning. Heather and Ken, however, both knew better than to stop that reckless kid. He was definitely going to look for the tablet, the Edict of the Yellow Emperor that had lain dormant in their attic for so many years, still a mystery in their minds. Ashley, on the other hand, wouldn't let the failure of his parents and grandparents get in the way of things. 

He wanted to try his luck and see if there was anything he could learn from reading the Edict of the Yellow Emperor. After all, it was harmless. It was just a tablet! Though he took what Ken said seriously, he still had his doubts - could such an ancient block of strange rock really allow a fated person to unlock the power of a tyrannical ruler? 

Reaching the attic, Ashley immediately began to rummage around, moving the stuff he deemed as unnecessary to another side. He found a lot of old photos from the past, but this wasn't the time to reminisce over them. He wasn't even in a lot of them, as the photos were mostly taken from the youth of his parents. 

Eventually, Ashley finally found what he was looking for. Though the tablet itself looked dusty and a bit worn, the text carved into it didn't seem to actually fade or get eroded by the test of time. It was kept in a glass container, which Ashley carefully carried and moved to a clear spot in the attic. 

He decided to stay inside the attic and not take the tablet back down with him, though ultimately it probably wouldn't have made a significant difference where he decided to study the tablet. With anticipation and excitement, Ashley removed the top of the glass container and took out the tablet, gently placing it down on the ground, text facing up where he could read it. 

As it was in the morning, there was some natural light pouring in from outside through a small window. However, there was only that one single window, so it was still not terribly easy to read what was on the tablet. Once again, Ashley remained undeterred. He began to carefully read the Edict of the Yellow Emperor, concentrating and trying to comprehend the words written on the tablet. It was in traditional Chinese, which was something Ashley was not incredibly proficient in - since he was living in Japan, he was much better in speaking Japanese. 

He had received lessons in Chinese from Heather but he was far from fluent in it. He only knew enough to carry on basic conversations and read the news articles online. It definitely wasn't enough to comprehend the archaic messages on this artifact. However, Ashley still tried his best to understand everything written here.

The Five Phases. A Cosmic Cycle which ruled the Geomancy of the World. At the center of it all was "ether." This was the major point Ashley could deduce with his general understanding of Chinese. It was not inconsistent with the theory of the same name commonly found in early schools of Chinese philosophy and thought. As he kept reading, a sudden realization struck Ashley's mind. 

There were several striking phrase which Ashley immediately committed to memory - keep in mind, his body was still taking in natural ether from the environment, even without his own knowledge. 

These phrases read, in common English, as something like - "The might of the August Thearch lay in the center of the cycle. The tempering of energy leading to the harvest. The might of the earthen dragon will reveal itself in time!" Ashley became incredibly interested - the Edict of the Yellow Emperor in this context was not the blueprint for a new technology. It was a prophecy! He knew that it was inconceivable his forefathers could not figure this out - they were much smarter than he was, after all. On the other hand, if this was really a prophecy, what did it mean? What, or who, exactly, possessed the might of the 'earthen dragon'? 

Ashley quickly went back to the passages on the tablet which referred to the Five Phases. Though there was no indication that other Edicts may have mentioned anything about the ether, the Edict of the Yellow Emperor made it painfully clear that ether was the purest form of energy manifested by duality of creation and destruction, perfectly encapsulated by the cycles presented by the Five Phases. 

It was a concept and theory that was very similar to the idea of the Four Quintessential Elements in Western tradition. By that token, Ashley had a feeling the Greek Edict of Zeus would have definitely spoken about the elements in its own classical way too, but the Edict of Zeus did not concern him. He continued to focus on the theory behind the Five Phases.

Wood feeds the Fire. Fire burns all to ashes, creating the Earth. From the Earth, Metal is borne. Metal thus collects Water, which nourishes Wood. This was the cycle representing creation, or the cycle of nurture. 

The Wood parts the Earth, the Earth muddies and absorbs Water, which in turn extinguishes the Fire. Fire melts Metal, while Metal cuts down the Wood. This was the opposing cycle of restraint, representing destruction.

As Ashley continued to attempt to deepen his understanding of the Five Phases and its ideas and concepts, he began to feel his body undergoing changes. He began to comprehend the idea of using the nature around him not only to nurture his body purely with ether, but to extract, absorb and destroy the energies inherent in nature's beauty and terrors. 

Ashley soon came to realize that even man-made activities could be integrated into the cycle. The world could easily be governed by the Five Phases at its very core. At the very bottom of the tablet, there was a crude drawing of a trigram, along with a very striking name written beneath it - Xuanyuan. 

Xuanyuan was the name given to the Yellow Emperor in the first century BCE, and also happened to be the name of the star Regulus in Chinese. Regulus, designated Alpha Leonis, was one of the brightest stars not only in its Leo constellation but even in the night sky. 

Ashley was not entirely sure why this name was etched beneath the trigram carving, but he knew the trigram itself could present some earth-shattering information if he could understand it. He continued to analyze it and the time passed by incredibly fast. It was already heading late into the afternoon and Ashley was immersed into the mysticism behind the tablet. It had gotten to the point where Heather worriedly entered the attic herself and saw Ashley in a near catatonic state, staring deeply and intently into the Edict of the Yellow Emperor.

However, to Heather's immense surprise, she saw the tablet itself beginning to glow with a very faint, golden yellow light. She began to see mists of ether grow thicker and thicker around Ashley. "Ken, get your butt up here!" Heather yelled out in concern. Hurriedly, the father also rushed up. Before Ken could even ask what happened, he saw the sight of Ashley studying the golden glowing tablet, surrounded by a mist of thick yellowish ether. 

Ken stared in a dumbfounded fashion. 

"This... This...!" he was in disbelief. Ken quickly came to a realization.

His son was beginning to unravel the mystery of the Edict of the Yellow Emperor.

Humanity has advanced rapidly over the years due to an alien inheritance seemingly bestowed by the Heavens themselves. Mankind has developed... Mankind has evolved. Even mundanes possess supernatural powers now. In fact, it was more of an abnormality if you did not possess powers.

Ashley Yanase was one such person. In fact, he was the only person without supernatural abilities that he knew. Armed with only his nymph-like, feminine appearance, Ashley struggled to live each day to the fullest... Until he happens upon a dusty tablet in his attic during spring cleaning.

The Edict of the Yellow Emperor. A mighty mandate from ancient times. Empowered with the eldritch powers from bygone civilizations, Ashley discovers a conspiracy that not only threatens his community, but perhaps even all of Earth...

Izroth was never the type to seek a confrontation willingly, however, he would not allow himself to be treated unfairly, especially if Orion wanted to intimidate him.
Orion had cut Izroth off before he even had a chance to explain himself and Kaz simply washed his hands of the problem even after Izroth had already explained to him that it was a misunderstanding.
While the books were scattered all around, there were not nearly enough tables in the library to hold all two thousand books unless they were stacked up all the way to the ceiling. Even though it may have looked disorganized at first glance to those viewing from an outside perspective, Izroth actually had the books neatly stacked into organized piles.
There were at least twenty of such piles scattered throughout the entire library. Of course, he had planned on returning every book to their original place after he finished reading everything on the first floor. After all, it would take him less than half a minute to return everything to its proper place using Flickering Steps.
However, his main reason for not putting the books back onto the bookshelf immediately after he finished was because of a one-minute delay before one was able to pick out another book.
Once a player picked out a book and then put it back on the shelf, they would not be able to grab a second book for one minute.
Izroth did not know why such a restriction was set in place. It may have been to encourage readers to choose a book carefully since they would have to wait a good while before being able to pick again. However, how long would it take him to read all the books on the first floor if he had to wait one minute every time he put a book back in its place?
But, what Izroth did not know was that the restriction was set in place by Orion himself. Orion believed that if one picked up a book, they should at the very least read it. Every single book within the palace library was a treasure to him and unique in its own way.
Therefore, the restriction was there to increase the chances of a book being read after it was picked up. What Orion did not take into account was someone with a monstrous reading ability such as Izroth.
Izroth, however, quickly found a way around that restriction. All he had to do was grab another book instead of returning it to the shelf and so he placed the piles in specific areas to make it easier when it came time to place them into their original spots. That was why it seemed so disorganized and scattered everywhere!
But before Izroth could even complete a full sentence, he was cut off by Orion and was not given the opportunity to explain himself properly.
"You said I was bullying you for reading?" Orion said as he waved his hand.
Swoosh!
A thick yellow book that was within one of the piles shot towards Orion, however, it stopped just as it was about to crash into his body and hovered before him. The yellow book was so thick that it would require the average person to use two hands just to carry it around!
"Have you read this book?" Orion asked.
"I have." Izroth responded without hesitation. He had read every book he touched within this library.
Orion's facial expression darkened when he heard Izroth's response. He created an opportunity for Izroth to be truthful, after all, even though he was furious at the young man before him, Izroth had managed to catch his eye. The number of people he met that were around Izroth's age that was able to simply stand before his Rhythmic Pressure skill could be counted with one's fingers alone!
However, he had only met two youths who were completely unaffected by his Rhythmic Pressure. One of the youths was a natural-born talent of an extremely powerful race, therefore, he was not too surprised as that much was to be expected. As for the second youth, that person was someone who possessed a gift that only came around once every one thousand years within the human race.
The young man in front of him had increased the number of youths who could resist his Rhythmic Pressure skill to a total of three! Not only that, although it was faint, that young man actually had a Source in its infancy stage and even now he could see it growing at an alarming rate.
But unfortunately, the young man decided to continue on with his lies, therefore, he would not allow him to walk away without some form of punishment. He had met plenty of arrogant and talented youths who needed to be taught a lesson in humility. So before he decided upon a punishment, he would let the young man make a fool of himself to teach him a thing or two about honesty.
"This book here is a fundamental book discussing the 255 laws of magic sequences. Tell me, what is the 103rd law?" Orion questioned.
Kaz was stunned. Usually, the Grand Master would have already tossed someone like Izroth out of the library and banned him from stepping foot into the palace or maybe even Amaharpe ever again! Could it be that the Grand Master wanted to teach this youth a lesson?
If so, then Kaz felt pity towards Izroth. Even he had not memorized something like the 255 laws of magic sequences by heart.
Izroth took a moment to organize his thoughts about the 255 laws of magic sequences. Although he had a perfect memory, he still had to compartmentalize everything or else it would end up being a jumbled up mess that he had to constantly search through.
After all, his main focus had been on simple memorization. He then planned to finish organizing his thoughts accordingly once he finished every book in the library.
It only took Izroth a brief moment to find his answer as he replied, "The 103rd law of magic sequences is that one should never cross an Astral magic cycle with a Nebula magic cycle, otherwise, you would only end up with a magic sequence that reverses itself and destroys your body from the inside out."
Orion raised his brows slightly in surprise. His answer was actually correct! However, could he just be lucky? There was only one sure way to find out.
"Next ques-" Orion was ready to give Izroth another question, but before he could finish his sentence, he was interrupted by Izroth.
"However, this can easily be prevented by reversing the original order of the Nebula magic cycle." Izroth added.
Orion frowned when he heard Izroth's words. Was this young man trying to intentionally kill someone with such false information? If any magic caster even attempted something so reckless they would die a terrible death.
"Are you trying to kill someone?! Even if you reverse the Nebula magic cycle, you'll only end up with a spell even more dangerous then when normally trying to use the Astral and Nebula magic cycles together! Think before you speak such nonsense before the Grand Master!" Kaz scoffed.
While he did not know all 255 laws of magic sequences by heart, that did not mean that he was not well-informed about most of them, especially one as life-threatening as the 103rd law.
"Indeed, my assistant is correct, young man. With that kind of change, it may not kill only the user, but those around the magic caster as well. You should not tamper with the fundamental laws of things, otherwise, you will only be in for a rude awakening and the consequences will not be light. I would suggest you erase that thought from your mind." Orion said.
"Even if you shortened the time in between each magic cycle interval by 0.015 seconds?" Izroth said in a carefree tone of voice.
"All you'd be doing is delaying the inevitable! Stop wasting the Grand Master's time with such-" Kaz was ready to mock Izroth, but he was quickly silenced.
"Quiet!" Orion said in a serious tone of voice as he furrowed his brows.
Kaz was scared speechless as he immediately swallowed the rest of his words. Was it possible that the Grand Master was so infuriated by Izroth's words that he would no longer wait to punish him? However, after around ten seconds passed by and Orion did not act or speak, Kaz was lost as to what the Grand Master was doing.
After staying that way for around a full thirty seconds, Orion finally set his gaze upon Izroth.
"Young man, your idea is not bad. In theory, it could definitely work. Unfortunately, in the end, the magic sequence would still collapse. While the magic caster would not be harmed, the spell itself will become unusable and useless." Orion said. To be quite honest, he was impressed with Izroth's findings even if they were not perfect.
While one could not cast a spell successfully, at the very least, they could potentially halt the magic sequence midway without causing harm to themselves. This could lead to a more in-depth look of the 103rd law and multiple studies that could very well change the laws of magic sequences forever!
"Normally that would be true, however, I believe you're overlooking one very important detail." Izroth stated.
Kaz nearly fainted! Was that young man intentionally trying to provoke the Grand Master? Overlooking something? This was the Grand Master he was talking about! In order to become a Grand Master, one had to hold a vast amount of knowledge about all kinds of subjects. There was no short line of individuals who wanted to have a Grand Master as their teacher.
However, there were less than ten Grand Masters in the whole world! To say that someone capable of holding the title of Grand Master had overlooked something was incredibly arrogant and wishful thinking!
"I may be coming up on my years, however, I am not senile just yet, young man. I've run through it over one hundred times in my mind and the end results are the same every time. I can assure you that I have not overlooked any details." Orion said assuredly.
"Then, when you reversed the Nebula magic cycle, did you also account for the change in its strands due to its reversal?" Izroth asked.
Strands were tiny mana strings that were manipulated to form a specific magic cycle. For most players within RML, all they had to worry about was the correct order magic sequences, however, the system usually did this automatically during the player's cast time. There were even some classes who required no attention to magic sequences.
However, for those classes that relied heavily on magic sequences such as Valentine's Sequence Mage class, it could be considered a nightmare to learn. In order to cast a spell, one had to form a specific number of magic sequences. In theory, if any magic caster could master the magic sequences of their spell, the casting time for said spell could be reduced down to nearly 0 seconds!
But, before they could form a magic sequence, they had to use the correct magic cycles. However, before they could invoke the correct magic cycles, it was necessary to use the correct strand type. There were three basic types of strands, light, medium, and heavy. These strands dictated how much mana a player used when casting a spell and how fast said mana would channel into the spell itself.
Orion's eyes widened slightly from shock. Of course! When one reversed the Nebula magic cycle while using an Astral magic cycle at the same time, it would cause the thickness of the strands to change from heavy to light due to how the two magic cycles would react to each other! How could he have overlooked such an important detail?!
If he went over it in his mind using that small change, the young man's method would certainly work! If one used it, they would be able to completely disregard the 103rd law of magic sequences! In other words, the young man before him had just rewritten a fundamental law that was carved in stone for centuries! What terrifying knowledge to possess at such a young age!
Right now, Orion had tossed his anger aside and had completely forgotten about his original intentions to teach Izroth a lesson. There was only one thing on his mind at the moment, what else dwelled within the mind of that young man?

"What are all these strange memories flowing into my mind..? I've been to all seven realms and have never seen one like this. Earth is it?"

"M-My cultivation..! It's back to nothing! This body is so weak and spiritual essence here is scarce. But my soul strength is untainted."

"Humor me," She replied.

"Well, during my accident when I was five and when I bought my first Pl*tia plushie when I was fifteen, I guess."

"Hmmmnn..." Goddess! I know you can read my mind, but please stahp!

Wait, you can read my mind. You are doing this on purpose aren't you?!

With a slight upturn of her lips, she took out a book and glasses from nowhere and began reading.

"Elric Blackmore soul was recorded to have died on that day when he had that accident when he was twelve. His death would have led to his father pouring his time into work to forget the pain and his mother spoiling his brother leading him to die at the age of 16 due to overuse of drugs."

"What was baffling is that his body continued to function even without his soul but with all his memories, essentially becoming a living meatsack emulating the man known as Elric. At the age of fifteen, a spark of soul was found inside him, and contrary to the laws of this realm, has formed ex nihilo*."

"Instead, his father became a successful business man while being a dedicated father to his family, going home every week just to spend time with his wife and kids. His mother became a successful government employee having raised filial children. And most importantly, his brother who was pushed to his limits and became a renowned genius who became the youngest Licensed Pharmacist at the age of sixteen."

"And this is bad?"

A nod. "Essentially yes. You see, life and death hangs on a thin balance. When a soul dies, it goes to the afterlife where it will be slowly purified and sent back as a blank slate."

"And I come in where?"

"I'm getting to that part." Her eyes narrowed slightly.

I nod at the unspoken warning.

"Okay, usually we have people removing themselves from the cycle via Enlightenment and whatnot. This is not necessarily a bad thing. You see, the cycle can be likened to that of a balloon filled with air to the brim. When a soul leaves the cycle, the balloon gets smaller. However, if a single soul enters, the whole balloon pops. You get what I'm trying to say?"

I nod. "So me dying is a bad thing."

A pause. "Essentially yes."

"So what now?"

"Now? There are a few solutions to this problem. One, I erase you from existence. Two, I can send you somewhere else..."

"And three?"

"And three, you can become my source of entertainment?"

"Wait... Like a ROB?"

"Essentially, yes."

"Do I at least get cheats?"

"Yes. It makes things more fun that way."

"Why didn't you say that in the first place? I don't care whether I'm a soul fragment, a fake, or something. Now, this contract, I AGREE."

Tang Peng grabbed the robes that was left behind by Lai Qing, and tried to feel the material. It was a purplish material that felt like silk. However, there were golden characters that was sewed onto the robes. 

Since it was worn by such a powerful cultivator, it must have some use. Tang Peng wore it on top of his original robes, since he did not want to directly wear it on his skin. After all, the person wearing it just now was a corpse. 

Next, he took the dark book and observed it. Normally, someone would die upon contact with this book, since it was loaded with thousands of Yin Toxins just on the cover alone, but Tang Peng's unique soul negated all the effects of the Yin Toxins. 

"Yin Gathering Art?" Tang Peng read the title of the book out loud. The title seemed like a promising start, so he opened the book to read more of its content. 

As he flipped to the first page, he saw a drawing of a mountain of corpses. "Death, murder, slaughter..." Upon seeing the corpses, Tang Peng was reminded of the gruesome scene he had seen. The voices in his head also started acting up again. 

He quickly flipped to the second page to avoid seeing that image. Now, there was a wall of words explaining the Yin Gathering Art on the second page. 

"Everything in the world has spirit. Spirit is the medium in which all cultivators cultivate. They absorb the spirit of the world, using it to advance the world inside of them."

"However, what happens when a cultivator or generally something with intelligence dies? This normally results in their spirit becoming part of the world, but with enough grudges and inner demons, their Qi and spirit will become Yin Qi. This is the technique I have formulated for myself, and it will help to propel me through the heavens!" 

As Tang Peng read out the preface, he had more understanding of this book. This book was clearly written by the old man which he had killed, and this was probably his cultivation method. 

He also understood the basics of the cultivation method. It was to take in the Yin Qi from dead cultivators or demonic beasts, to cultivate the same way as other cultivators does. The Qi would be stored in the head, along with the soul, where the soul would refine it into spiritual soil, or be used to unlock meridians in the body. 

Tang Peng could not help but do a double take after learning it was coming from dead creatures. He had been taught from young that violating the dead was a cruel and sacrilegious act to do. Now, this book was telling him uprightly to directly steal their essence. 

He felt conflicted inside, but upon remembering his goal of resurrecting the dead, the goal was not all that different from the cultivation method. He would violate the natural laws either way, so he hardened his heart and carried on.

"Of course, there are some limitations to this method I discovered. Mainly, the natural Yin Qi produced is not a lot. This means that in order to accelerate my cultivation, I will have to create more strife among the various factions in the Five Stars Continent, which is extremely dangerous. Not only that, I have also become increasing vulnerable to pure Yang skills."

"Still, this method of cultivation allows me to harbour lots of different Yin Toxins, which is extremely useful against Yang cultivators. As long as I take the necessary precautions, all cultivators are a piece of cake for me!" 

Tang Peng felt like the sentence at the end was a bit arrogant, but considering that the old man had really reached such a high realm that he did not even know of, he really deserved every right to be arrogant. 

Tang Peng flipped to the next few pages. He skimmed through them, and found that he needed to use the Yin Gathering Art and get a cultivation base before he even started to learn the basics of the technique that was listed on these pages. The name of the technique was called Ghost Refinement Process. It was, well, about refining ghosts. 

Tang Peng then settled down on the ground, and started to breathe in the method that was described to him. A deep breath, followed by a quick exhalation. This created a powerful rotation within his body, which drew in the thick Yin Qi that surrounded him. 

Inside the book, the old man recorded down that the perfected method he had eventually developed still had a failure rate of 90%. It was extremely hard to cultivate using this method. 

However, the moment Tang Peng did the breathing cycle, the Yin Qi flowed freely in his body, rotating frequently in a cycle. Tang Peng knew that he had an affinity with Yin Qi, but he was still shocked that he did it on the first try. 

The Yin Qi flowed into his body through all of his orifices, once he developed the cycle inside his body. Tang Peng could feel all the Yin Qi go to his head freely after they completed one cycle in his body. It seemed like the Yin Qi had a strong attraction to his soul in his head.   

Now, it was time for him to refine the Yin Qi into spiritual soil. Tang Peng drew the sigils on the ground using his fingers. As the sigils radiated with each other, Tang Peng could feel the sigils and an unknown existence imprinted onto his mind, as the sigils turned into nothing. It caused pain, but it was nothing compared to the pain he felt when everyone in his village died. 

Since the sigils were now set in place, Tang Peng closed his eyes, and started directing the cycling Yin Qi to enter his soul. There was no resistance at all, as he started to convert the Yin Qi into spiritual soil. 

However, the voices of the dead and their grudges started to ring in Tang Peng's head as soon as he started converting Yin Qi. The reddish Yin Qi showed up again, as it combined with the Yin Qi that was coming in. 

Tang Peng's body appearance started to flicker. The sigils that he had drawn flared up on his arm, and his arm was going through a significant change. Then, as the spiritual soil was processed, Tang Peng opened his eyes, revealing a chaotic aura within them.

Just tried to remaster this and I realised there is a hell lot of plot holes. Might have to stop updating for a few days to rewrite entire chapters.
