Perhaps there are other underlying reasons too. Don't forget, there is a regrettable character in "Road to the Buddha". She is Dragon Lady Aoluan, who had been devoted to the hero Zhou Qing all the way. But in the end, she still perished before the eyes of Zhou Qing by stabbing herself with a sword. The final sentence in the novel ---

Sigh, the ending of Dragon Lady Aoluan was heartbreaking! She was no doubt the female character that was most engraved within the reader's mind in this popular Antiquity-fashion webnovel. Not to mention, no other characters had suffered such a misfortune like hers. When the book "Road to the Buddha" was mentioned, one could easily remember this sentimental female character. You can say that the superior fame of this book did not really come from the character moldings, instead, it was out of the magnificent story settings and plots.
Akin to "Road to the Buddha" having all sorts of indispensable foreshadowings prior to the appearance of divine realm, the preceding chapters of "Pure Romance" were full of mundane Harem plots too. If not, how will the coming chapters strike those readers like a thunderbolt?
At first, the main character of "Pure Romance", Yang Ming had been undergoing a typical storyline like any other Harem heroes. But now, he suddenly conceded to his lust, regaining his men's nature to think with their penis. Sure enough, the readers had enjoyed those scenes to their heart's content. Looking back to the other Harem novels, they would feel their main characters were all hypocrites! So boring…... How could the grazing romance be comparable to shooting the real bullets[5], Ahh…
After the later plot of "Pure Romance" unfolded, a catastrophe had befallen the other bland Harem mangas. In a sense, it had become an overt sabotage of the other businesses!

POSITIVE REVIEW :

CD has a very special place in my heart, which is why I'm also a bit bias towards it, being one of the first Xianxia I read.
This is an amazing piece to begin with if you're new to Xianxia, reason being that it's a complete translation, no need to wait a day, or week for a new chapter. Just binge through it all.
What really makes this one great is the relationships the MC has with different characters, which just helps flesh out the personality of the MC. This story should've been a bit longer in my opinion, to focus a bit more on certain characters, because this story suffers greatly from ignoring certain character for quite some time, until they become necessary for the story again, which is a bit sad, because many of them has been a great part of the story, until they're not. It makes it feel a bit rushed.
The world, the adventures, everything is extremely well written, it's such an amazing joy to read, and you just wish you could experience something like it while reading it, it's simply amazing. CD has its flaws, but I'm uncertain if it's because I'm bias toward it, or that it's just simply that good, that I gave it a 5/5. The non-bias part in me would like to rate it at 4/5, but in the top tier of 4s, because I feel like there's the possibility it could've been even better with more chapters, exploring characters, adventures and romance more.
UPDATE:
So I've read CD again, for the second time. Why should you read this? Because I Eat Tomatoes, the author is simply a genius at tugging at your heart strings, and making up likable characters and creating an amazing world, which shares the same universe as some of his other works. Of course reading it a second time, you notice some of the flaws.
In general all of I Eat Tomatoes works revolves around "Luck" which can be noticable in CD quite a bit, but I didn't find it overly so, except for a few cases, where luck simply is the only thing keeping the MC alive, but I can let it slide, since I can't come up with a better way of making such a rich and interesting story to begin with.
Also, the fighting becomes more or less the same at a point in the story, but the Author has still done a good job at keeping it interesting, but it does become predictable as it gets closer to the end. The most serious "flaw" this novel faces, though, is still the abandonment of characters, as most are really well written and introduced and to just forget about them is really the big flaw of CD. Getting a conclusion of what happened to some characters at the end would've been the cherry on the top for this novel.
This is still one of the best written novels out there, and I can't recommend it enough.

Well, where should I start.. Okay~
Coiling Dragon (Panlong) is honestly.. my first Chinese Novel. People regard their first novel as 'The one that made them read more', but it wasn't the case for me.
First, I'll start with good points of Coiling Dragon:

1. CD is a good novel for beginners. Unlike other Novels like ISSTH and TMW, this novel doesn't use 'Qi' or any chinese power leveling. In return, the story uses our typical Four Elements + Other Add-in to rank their powers.
2. CD has a very good initial setting. The MC, Linley is a scion of Baruch Clan, which is known for their Dragon Bloodline. He was branded as a failure after a test, but all of these changed when he acquired the *tada* Coiling Dragon Ring. There comes Grandpa Doehring. He became his teacher and taught him ways how to improve his strength and to obtain a way how to activate his Dragon Bloodline.
3. CD has a good 'Early' Romance setting. The part when Linley chose Delia over Alice is the highest point of their romance, In my Opinion.
4. For people who likes to read long novels, this is the novel for you. It is the first one of the Xianxia Genre to be fully translated. The quality of translation is good also.
5. If you like astronomically large numbers, the Author likes to give those kind of numbers.

The bad points of Coiling Dragon

1. Coiling Dragon, in a sense, has a very ridiculous PLOT ARMOR. Like IET's Novels, ALL coincidences happen to him, as if the author inserts them just to make a new objective. His Luck is way past the luck of other lucky protagonist, that you'll think his survival along the story was due to luck. Yes, he is hardworking, but much of his strength comes from luck.
2. Romance and Family setting is also ridiculous. There is a part where the MC leaves his family for almost 10 years and just to see his son and daughter grown up. Yes, he is a peerless expert, but he is a bad father.
3. Battle scenes are very annoying. If you want to describe their battle scenes, It looks like two saiyans fighting together. You won't see anything because of their very fast movement. All the audience can say is 'How fast!' and 'Such Strength!'
4. CD's plot is just confusing. Many characters are introduced, but almost the same number was forgotten.
5. In short, CD is a story with OP MC that flaunts 'MY MC's Soooo OP that...' It's that kind of story.\\

Elyon knew that "Romance" is not his strong point. He writes a fantasy story with romance, but he can't tell if the romance will be able to attract female readers. Out of curiosity, he asked some of his fellow authors the question "Why do you read romance stories?"

Here are their answers…

Kyosei: Because I am single. 

Reili: To fill my empty void of a love life.

Minrei: Because romance let you feel what is to be loved, plus it is universal you dont need to learn magic or cultivation in order to read.

Bajj: Due to lack of romance irl.

Murakami: I read because I enjoy the friction and conflict between the FL and ML. The insistence vs resistance is naisu.

Qin: I reads romance only for ideas and info.

VlassisBehrakis: I don't read romance novels.

[A/N: Oof I asked the wrong person.]

Elyon then  ̶a̶m̶b̶u̶s̶h̶e̶d̶ asked some readers about their opinion about romance novels.

Yin: I read romance novels because I want that kind of drama to happen to me in real life. But I know it will never happen haha.

A Certain Irresistible Meowlin: I wonder why? And I do read romance novels. Though the chance of me dropping them is also the highest out of all the genres. Every so often I come across a scene that makes me just want to squeal and fangirl.

Elyon decided to dig deeper and asked a few of his senior "romance authors" some questions about their reason for writing romance stories.

The first question is… Why did you choose to write Romance Stories?

Anjeeriku: I'm comfortable writing romance stories compared to other genres. I'm a helpless romantic person and I like novels that can invoke other people's feelings.

Bajj: First of all, I like reading romance story. It was the reason why I read books before and reading other genres comes after. All in all, due to these romance fiction books, I got the opportunity to read more great books with different genre.

MishaK: That's what I read, so write that too.

Zehell2218: Because as reader, I want to read romance novel so when I write, I write romance since my motto is I write what I want to read.

Ikazainudin: The easiest genre. Everyone can relate.

End_of_Era: It wasn't a full on Romance, it was slice of life with romance which I feel was necessary with progression of the characters.

The second question… When you were making your ML and FL, did you imagine yourself as the lead of your story at any given point in time?

Anjeeriku: I would be a liar if I said no. There were instances that I'd put myself in my FL's shoes. Whenever that happens, my writing feels more passionate and truthful that sometimes it was hard to know where my fl starts and where I end. 

Shen Yi, LMD's ML was based on a person I've lost, The One That Got Away so it was sometimes hard not to self-insert whenever there were scenes that need to invoke feelings from readers. 

Bajj: I believe that every character the author was making and breathing life into it, a part of him/her is added to its character. But me imagining of being the ML/FL, never. I'm too pure for that. Kek

MishaK: Yes I did but sometimes. Otherwise you can't infuse emotions in your characters. It is important to understand your characters.

Zehell2218: Yes, I imagine myself as the lead. Of course, I tweak it a bit, such as in age and appearance. But mostly, the characteristics is similar to me.

Ikazainudin: FL and ML character based on what I want to be irl. Yup. I imagine that will be my love story.

End_of_Era: Yes, my leads had some ocassional self insertion.

The third question… If you were to choose some other genre aside from romance, what would you pick?

Anjeeriku: Fantasy. I always look up to those authors who can write fantasy stories/novels well. I believe writing a fantasy novel is harder than writing romance.

Bajj: Horror/thriller/Action. Read GGGB godamnit! [Good Girl Gone Bad]

MishaK: I am writing a Fantasy romance aside from regular vanilla romance *smile emoticon*

Zehell2218: Fantasy, magical realism, fan fiction.

Ikazainudin: Psychological/horror and maybe children story.

End_of_Era: The new genre I'm writing is fantasy/violent .

The fourth and final question… If you were to give a message to your beloved readers, what would it be?

Anjeeriku: I'm sorry for not being inconsistent with updates. Y'all know I love you, but a little consideration and patience as I face this rough patch in my life would be very much appreciated.

Hello Guys! I hope you enjoyed this chapter of WWCG. Personally, I've read a few CEO novels myself. I also read some FL stories like A Slight Smile Is Devastating (Love O2O), Hidden Marriage, Doomed to be Cannon Fodder, Transmigrator meets Reincarnator, A Mistaken Marriage Match: A Generation of Military Counselor, There Is an Angel in That Church (short story), Eight Treasures Trousseau, Grabbing Your Hand, Dragging you Away, A Mistaken Marriage Match: Record of Washed Grievances…

Ai~ there's a few more that I won't add to the list because it will create a wall of text. Well anyways, the reason why I read these stories is to get an idea on "WHY" the ladies love to read them.

Let's just say that it's a unique way to see a world in the eye of a lady (if you are a man of course). When done properly, the execution of the story can capture the hearts of anyone, even male readers. I believe that no matter what gender you are, as long as you find the story interesting then it doesn't matter whether you are a guy or a gal no?

Perhaps, when I'm not too busy to write my stories, I'll once again pick a romance novel to read. Hopefully, I will find another hidden gem that will bring unexpected surprises to anyone who are lucky enough to find them.

"Secret?" I ask uncertainly.

"Yup a secret." She nods. Then a long silence follows. Although still looks impassive with no emotions on her face, her fingers begin to fidget. "I promise it's a good secret. Nothing bad. And I am definitely not someone weird. No..." She chews on her lips insecurely, finally showing something akin to emotion on her face.

She must have interpreted my less than enthusiastic response as being hesitant when in reality I am just shocked. 

I put on a smile and plop down on the chair. "Tell me about it." 

She visibly relaxes. "So it's like this, do you remember reading a story online about a talented mage going on some dark adventures? The mood of that story is really heavy, so it's not very well received." 

"Well that's a difficult question. You have me, someone who doesn't really remember the plot of the novel I myself transmigrated into. Please give me some time." I try to think back to all the novels I have read before. 

"But isn't Conquer the World- Mermaid Princess & the Narcissistic Prince your favorite novel?"

"No. Who told you about it? It's just a silly novel I sneaked in between tests and assignments I did not want to do."

"Silly stories you won't even remember one day after reading it."

"Exactly." 

"Then why did Vale think it's your favorite novel? That's why he sent you to this world."

"This is definitely not my favorite novel! And Lord Valentine should not be able to know my favorite novel. The two of us are practically strangers."

Irene drums her fingers on the table and a tiny smile is tugging at her mouth."So... the mage story?"

"Can you give me more hints. There are tons of novels with mages in it. It's a really popular genre. One of my favorite novels features a mage too... You aren't talking about Trapped in the Darkness, are you?"

Irene snaps her finger. "Bingo." 

"It's one of my favorite novels! The adventures are really well written and the magic in the story! Those spells and potions. The whole system, everything! It's the only novel I read that don't have romance in it. I thought there's one coming when I first started it, but anyway I didn't drop it even if it doesn't have romance."

"That story was not really popular, but there was a reader who kept leaving comments."

"One? There were quite a lot of people that left comments. If you're talking about die hard fans like me, there was also one reader. We always discussed the characters and plot together!"

"That die hard fan is the author. He pretended to be a reader of his own novel. Well so as to talk to you I guess." 

"What?" I am so shocked. Why does Irene know that? A mage... a heavy and dark story... It couldn't be..."Is the author... Lord Valentine?"

Irene nods in something close to excitement, but her face remains placid. "You know his mother really put a lot of pressure on him. He really wanted an outlet where he could unleash all his emotions. One day he found me reading stories online and that gave him an inspiration to write stories. He just wanted an outlet, so he really didn't expect any readers. But you came in and left all those comments. After awhile, he wanted to get in touch with you. Don't look at me like that. I knew all these because Carl figured that out. Vale was typing on his phone all the time with a sweet smile on his face. It's no surprise Carl figured that out."

"What... So... I can't believe it! Lord Valentine is the author of my favorite novel! I talked with the author! Oh my goodness. It's like meeting your idol! Can you believe it? It means I have been talking with the author himself but I didn't realize!" I nearly squeal in excitement. I can't help but to fangirl. 

"Actually that day he appeared in your university because he knew you studied there. No no no, he didn't check on you or did anything creepy. You told him accidentally while talking with him, mentioning a statue or something that your university is famous for. He wished to take a look at the university you studied in. Asking you for direction was pure fate."

"That's why his bad cousin misunderstood. The cousin must have investigated everything beforehand. He knew I was the one chatting with Lord Valentine online."

Irene nods solemnly. "But the main focus of this anecdote is how fated you two are. Vale realized you were his devoted fan only after your death. He was trying to decide which fictional world to send you to." 

"Then why didn't he send me to his novel? He knew I love it!"

"That is left for you to discover." The corners of her mouth quirk up. "So tell me what kind of drama do you like to watch?"

"Did you have a fun time discussing dramas and novels with Irene?" Lord Valentine asks. "Irene may seem cold, but she is just shy."

"I know. She is just someone with a resting emotionless face. Yup I had fun. I got some secrets you're hiding too." I wink. 

"I am no longer hiding any secrets, I swear," Lord Valentine says solemnly. "And don't trust Irene too much, Carl has been such a bad influence."

"I am going to tell her how you badmouth about her next time! And I was winking! I was not even angry at you!" I punch him playfully on the arm.

Lord Valentine blinks his eyes a few times as if not comprehending what's going on. 

Smirking, I ask, "Why did you tell me you're the author of Trapped in Darkness? I would have worshiped you!" 

"You mean you haven't already? Don't lie to me." He pats me on my head. "Irene told you that? I don't know what you'll think of me if you find out the gentle Lord Valentine wrote something so dark and depressed." 

"It's my favorite novel! I am just going to fangirl over you, stupid. Why didn't you send me to the story you wrote? You know I love it. I even had discussions with you."

"It's too dark and depressed." He shakes his head. "Don't you like this world? And I could grant you immortality in this world. Together with me."

"Silly Lord Valentine." I laugh and lean forward to give him a hug. I mutter next to his ears, "I would be happy wherever you sent me. As long as you're with me. Forever."
